In early December a five-year-old female shepherd-lab mix was discovered - still alive - in the midst of the garbage in a garbage truck as it was being emptied into the Edgeboro landfill in East Brunswick.

Ron Barbati of the Perth Amboy Department of Public Works said the truck had just been emptied of most of the 29,440 pounds of garbage it carried, when he walked to the back of the truck to move the dozen or so garbage bags that had not fallen out.

As he reached for a piece of cardboard, a dog raised her head from among the garbage.

Shocked, Barbati yelled, "There's a dog in my truck!"

It turned out that the dog had been brought to the Perth Amboy animal shelter by a city resident on the previous day. Animal control officer William Paul had told her the dog would be euthanized because there was no room in the shelter.

Paul carried out the euthanization procedure on the dog, and threw her body into a dumpster.

That night, the dumpster was emptied and its contents taken to a waste transfer station where the garbage was packed into trailers to be transferred to the landfill.

After the dog was discovered alive at the landfill, East Brunswick police and animal control officer David Blumig were called, and Blumig lassoed the dog to get her out of the truck.

"She was kind of wagging her tail between her legs." Barbati said.

After checking her for injuries, Blumig took the dog to a kennel run by his sister Linda.

In the days since the incident, Linda Blumig said nearly 60 people have already called her from New Jersey and surrounding states, offering to adopt the dog.

Several of those people had called thinking the dog was theirs, she said.

"If people would put a name tag on their pet, 95 percent of the time they would get the pet back," Ms. Blumig commented.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and the Perth Amboy police are investigating the incident to determine if any criminal or disciplinary charges should be filed. The dog will not be adopted out until the investigation into the incident is complete.

"Obviously it's a miracle," said SPCA officer Michael Iovine. "The dog was euthanized with drugs, presumed dead, put into a plastic bag and then a trash compactor and compressed, and survived that."

"It's just amazing it lived through that whole mess," he remarked.

State officials also plan to investigate Paul's actions.

"This horrible incident is unfortunate and the Department of Health and Senior Services will do everything within its authority to investigate, identify what occurred and put into place measures to prevent another incident of this type," Department of Health and Senior Services spokesperson Donna Leusner said.

Paul said in an interview with the SPCA that he followed proper procedure, giving the dog one shot to sedate her and another to stop her heart before listening with a stethoscope for a heartbeat.

Under New Jersey state law, throwing a euthanized dog in the trash is legal.

Wow that dog is very lucky to be alive!

Wow, that dog is very lucky to be alive. It is far out to do the euthanization procedure on the dog and threw the dog body into a dumpster.

Wow. That puppy is meant to be alive. He looks so much like my pup Sunny right down to the white marking on his chest. One of his legs need to be looked at. :aw:

Poor dog. I hope it gets a really good home for the rest of its life.

GOD, dog got lucky he alive,, who ever threw that dog in the dumpster will get his or her ass kick for animal cruelity abuse.

wow lucky dog! she supposed to be dead .. bec they put her in sleep .. i suspect that they didnt do it so they decide to put something temeporty drug that sleep longer.. so she sleep ... like start with T.. i forgot .. that drug stayed longer in sleep without dead or with any organs stop.. so they put it back to dumpter.. then again they found rme! but glad to keep her after she awake! she looks good! cute! i dont think it five years old.. it seem like 2 years old or less.. i guess the owner cant afford to feed so they throw her aways as that idea.. it really disgusting.. they should .. like announce she is on sale .. someting like that..

It wasn't animal cruelity or abuse. It was legal for them to throw away a dead dog into the trash (only in NJ) but dog probably didn't actually get enough dose of medicine to put dog to sleep due to overcrowd at the shelter.

I'm glad that dog survived all the elements. I don't like how animal shelters put them to sleep due to overcrowded shelter, why can't they just transfer pets to some other shelter anyway.

Oh gosh! I hated those people who have been cruel to the dog! Threw the poor in the dump! Thats so CRUEL!!! Imgaine if human body have been chuck it away in the dump??!!

The reason is money. I would love to see the puppy mills outlawed in all states. Why breeding to sell puppies when there are so many unwanted dogs out there? Those puppy mill owners are in for the money as well and they see dogs as livestock.

NEVER PURCHASE FROM A PET SHOP, BACK YARD BREEDER OR MILLS!

Before making a decision for a dog, please consider your local animal shelter.

Yeah, that's true....they should not breed their dogs for money, only for love and don't want overpopulation of them and not everyone wants a dog too. I just hate those people, ugh.

Lucky .. I think its 6 months old! Saw news this a.m.!! Sad!

:eek2:

Reminds me of someone in my parents' area who illegally dumped dead dogs from a pet clinic outside on a dirt road somewhere.

What a beautiful looking dog ... an absolute miracle!

That's amazing for the dog to go through this ordeal. I suppose the dog was meant to be alive, not dead.

Apparently they didn't give a strong dose of the euthanization drug on the dog.

East Brunswick? That's about 45 min away from me. I volunteered at Dog Shelter at Teterboro. It's very unfortunate that my shelter recently changed to a new controversial & unpopular policy this year - now it's a high-kill shelter due to budget cut and high volume of abandoned/surrendered dogs in the capacity for long time. For past several years, it was a no-kill shelter.

or maybe insufficient amount of dosage. euthanization drug costs money

Yes, Perhaps. I realize the drug is expensive. Even though the procedure was followed properly but yet, like you said, it is possible that the amount was insufficient. Also, the other thing is, is it possible that they might have miscalculated the weight of the dog vs the amount of the dosage? That's the only thing I can think of which could have made the dog survive through the euthanization procedure. :dunno:

You quitted because of this new policy?
