Not really, one of my roommates are required to check every years or whatever. He said that if you live in LA County then you are requires emission inspection every years and some other counties are 2 years or whatever.
 
volcomskatz, California already has a preminum for the strict emission controls on the car engines which you have to pay extra over the regular price that offered in many other states in the US under federal emission limits.

Well, the reason why LA is so smoggy is because there's way too many cars and trucks in the metro area. It's the second largest metro area after New York City area.

Per my friend's comment, both annual vehicle safety and emission inspections are still required in Weber, Davis, Salt Lake, and Utah counties in Utah (between Ogden and Provo). However, only annual vehicle safety inspection is still required in the rural areas outside of Salt Lake City-Ogden-Provo area.

Over 60 million registered motor vehicles in 20 states are subject to mandatory periodic safety inspections. The economic argument for mandatory inspection relies on the idea that vehicle maintenance reduces the accident rate and therefore provides external benefits. However, a new study in the Southern Economic Journal suggests that this is not the case.

Inspections do not significantly decrease the number of old cars on the road.

Moreover, inspections do not significantly increase the amount of revenue that repair companies earn.

Putting these two observations together, the researchers conclude that inspections do not improve the quality of vehicles on the road. If inspections did improve quality, then either old cars would be pulled off the road because of safety failures or people would need to spend more money on repairing their automobiles. Since neither occurs, inspections fail to reach their goal.

The authors suggest that oversight of inspectors is weak. A Washington Post investigation found that in a recent year, about 600 out of 4,300 inspection stations in Virginia issued no rejection stickers at all. Massachusetts officials claim that monitoring the inspection performance of licensed garages is prohibitively expensive. Additionally, other studies show that inspection stickers can be readily obtained on the black market for as little as $40.

They leave out a few other states, too. I don't know why. Also, there are other typos. Still, it's a pretty good list to start with.

FL doesn't require emissions testing (although, some Co. DO require it). Probably for the same reasoning as S. Carolina.

I see, it would going happen in Washington in 2008 or 2009? Does preminum means that vehicles are required to fix to improving emission for extra pay?

If want exempt from emission test then just get hybrid car, motorcycle, natural gas powered, diesel and any vehicles that are 1975 or older.

We need change the gas into other natural would solve the emission but too hard to find out.

Of course, LA metro is going be 1st largest metro in next decade or so.

I guess LA area is more stricter than the bay area to have smog checked every year.. while here in Bay Area gets to have smog checked every 2 years.

Yea because LA is #1 or #2 most smog problem, and Houston can be #1 or not sure.

from CNN report:

The least smoggy metropolitan area is Ames, Iowa, followed by
Bellingham, Washington; Brownsville, Texas;

Where's 2005 or 2006? because some people said that Houston is bad or something.
 
That's interesting I noticed some of these cities
in Florida are cleaniest (especially the ones
that do NOT require emission inspection !!!)

Emission inspections are important to solve the problem with air quality and poor air quality can be effect to other people that who have lung problem, such as ashtmas. There's nothing with republicans or democrats and emission is part of concern with environment issues, if you want removes the all emission inspections then LA will be end up like in 60's and 70's with completely smog infested because of all your fault. I'm support emission inspections because it take good with environment and our air quality in LA are much improving than in 60's and 70's. You just talk like bullshit because some people that who are republicans to take good care with environment, that it.

I have agree with Sweetheart and Sequoias about get better with less smog.
