Yes it is. I saw the story on TV. It is disgusting.

I dunno about that nor care about that since I didn't watch the TV. But I do know one thing that I am pissed off that I wasted my taxes on useless and immoral war.

That's what bothers me.

No. It appears that it is just uniform. ravensteve have a bad habit -- did not post the links or articles. Here's full story:

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Nestled in a quiet Sacramento neighborhood is a very loud political statement that is testing the very foundation of the right to free speech.

Hanging from a house in Land Park, a soldier's uniform in a noose dangles from a rooftop. The words "your tax dollars at work" are scrolled across the chest.

In a community full of patriotism, this view of the war in Iraq has not gone unnoticed.

"I think it's the ultimate sign of disrespect. We have troops dying for us," Land Park resident Mark Cohen said.

"(I'm) annoyed and disgusted. I think if this is the way someone feels they can find a better way to vent their opinions," Land Park resident Pete Miles said.

The homeowners behind the controversy are Steve and Virginia Pearcy. They released a statement saying, "There will always be people who are offended by political speech, and the most important forum of all ... is one's own residence. The First Amendment is meaningless unless dissent is allowed."

Some neighbors agree.

"Even if you don't agree with it, he has the right to state his opinion. I don't find it offensive at all," Land Park resident Cece Williams said.

The tension in the neighborhood has escalated into more than just a political feud.

The matter has been reported to the police department and to the city attorney. The city council has even heard about it, but says they can't solve the problem.

"Unfortunately or fortunately this is protected speech by the First Amendment ... so there is nothing we can do about it," Sacramento City Councilman Rob Fong said.

KCRA 3 received a call late Wednesday morning from the homeowner saying that a group of people had torn down the display. He said that what he did was not illegal, but what was done by the people who removed the display was.

The subhumans who tore it down are disgusting.
I totally agree with and support the display, because sometimes some rather drastic measures are necessary for the truth to be discussed and known.
As Thomas Jefferson once remarked, "Men are apt to be blind to unpleasant truth."

You have the right to make a statement. Be we dont have to look at it. Just like those city counselmembers can tell you that the navity cannot be displayed in downtown they have the power to remove it. Just like they guy removed the fake displayed soldier down because some of us dont agree with it. Just like the city counselmembers dont agree with christmas displays.

aw thanks for the details...that makes much sense now.

I've even heard some people even have the rights to burn down the american flags, even if they are american citizens, they can do whatever they want witht the flags. :dunno:

This is Freedom of Expression. The person putting up the display has the right to do it regardless of how offensive it may be to some. You do have a point about the Nativity, however. If you can display one thing, you should also be able to display another. In my mind, there is no difference.

Actually the proper way to dispose of your worn out Old Glory is to burn it, not throw it into the trash.
Weird, huh, but there is some dignity to it.

The homeowners have the right to show their display.

The person who tore it down was wrong to do that.

IMO, the display dishonors the American soldiers who have died. It shows the effigy of an American soldier hanging in a noose. I think that is disgusting. That is not a protest of war. That is showing hate for the soldiers.

They have the right to show it, and I have the right to state my opinion about it. If I lived in that neighborhood, I would not try to touch or remove that display. But I could picket that house. I could walk back and forth in front of their house with an American flag and a poster "Support Our Troops".

I can understand your feelings, Reba, and I know what a touchy subject this is. I try to see this from all perspectives, and I still fall short because not everyone can be pleased with any single action of protest. From my perspective, the people who made that display were signalling that our troops are hung out to dry in Iraq, etc. Let's leave it at that. There is something unsatisfactory about the display, but I disagree that it comes from "hate." I think it comes from real concern and caring and it just backfired.

Correct. The flag is burned in a ceremony with dignity. It is not just tossed into an incinerator with the trash to burn. Usually Boy Scout troops or Veteran organizations do annual ceremonies. If you have an old flag, you can give it to them to be disposed of properly.

Our porch flag hangs 24/7 (we have an automatic spot light for nighttime), so we replace it at least once a year. We fold them into the traditional tri-corner shape and give them to VFW for ceremonial burning.

It is legal for protestors to burn flags, if the flags belong to the protestors, and they burn them following fire safety rules. Sometimes that requires a permit for a public place. I don't like it but that is their right.

For people living in the South, effigy hanging is even more ugly because it is a visual reminder of lynching. It brings back very bitter memories for many people.

I did not think of that angle, and it is a good point.
However, present actions can cause more further bitter feelings and we can only hope that freely communicating our concerns will alleviate them, if not eradicate them entirely.
BTW, congrats on passing your 2000th post, ya whore, ya.

Freedom of speech on PRIVATE property. The guy has every right to hang that there, and it does NOT offend me. I don't support this war. I never did support it from the start.

Speaking of nativity scenes, the town I live in was just involved in a case about public holiday displays in front of City Hall. Read about it here or Google it here

:werd: :gpost: ...I don't find it offend either and beside it not on my property so I care less what they do on theirs, and beside they do have the right to express an opinion whether or not they may not like it or if it may offend some of them....

The only advice to give to the others that offend them is, don't look at it and ignore it! ;)
