Do you turn them off or leave it on at all times?

It only iced up when it is losing freon until the point where freon is out, it won't work and will not ice up. I have seen it happens.

BTW that is the freon Im using on my AC, it is no longer legal to install new system using that type of freon.

That's what my uncle told me about lack of freon.

Air Conditioner Ice -- So Why Does Air Conditioner Icing Up

Our air filter was new (ruled out) and my uncle had to fill the freon, so the AC started cooling very well now.

huh weird. something new I learned today.

is this only on old A/C?

The idea of freon is to suck the heat out of ambient air and throw these heat outside. That is how it works. Compressor compressed the freon and it gets hotter, and goes around coil to cool down, that is why fan is there to cool down the compressed freon and when it gets on top of furnace, it release the pressurized freon, it gets cold right? Just like when you spray the paint can too long, it gets cold. If it is not enough freon, it will get EVEN colder and can build up ice. But once freon is gone, there is nothing to compress so can't ice up.

It was coil froze like hard ice and the AC stopped cooling for nearly 24 hours.

It was so hot and humid without AC - the summer is pretty brutal in the south.

Happened to mine, on third year with AC. That is when I decided call another AC contractor. They found the problem, it was just a refill valve. They replaced it, ever since it works awesome, and much better than first three years.

ah gotcha.

I am surprised this thread was so in deep discussion. Very good, indeed.

Yes, I think you are lucky about not deal with brutal heat and I went without AC at Gally dorm for few days during summer because AC broke so the man had to fix it. My experience without AC at Gally dorm was fairly hot but at my home without AC, it was WORST EVER in my life and it was EXTREMELY HOT in my room. :ugh:

Did you manage to set up some fans to keep yourself cool/cold?

How do you find out if your AC is running properly? I learn from a friend who was contractor. he said AC always drops around 20 degrees. If it is too much or too little, it is not working right. Later, I verified that he was right.

For example I have thermometer on intake duct and exhaust duct. If I see intake duct temperature at 78 degrees, then exhaust duct should read 58 degree +- 3 degrees. If yours falls in that range then your system works perfectly. If say 78 to 68 then something is wrong.

Fan just blowing hot air, whats point?

I personally can't stand without AC. It kills my lungs easy, I got asthma. The heat and humid really hard on me. Fan won't relieve what I am dealing.

Yes but not enough.

I live in area that is humid with a lot of heat. If outside is 100 F with high heat index so it felt like 120 F or more.

Oh wow, you have good reason to not live in southern state.

Sounds like a tropical area. :eek3:

Really it is officially subtropical not tropical.

Yes, southern FL is tropical climate.

My best friend from Miami and he told me about climate in Atlanta is more harsher in summer than in Miami.

If some of you reading this and wondering which is cheaper Central AC installation or window AC unit.

Both of them have advantage and disadvantage. Central AC, the most advantage is just cosmetically. They are very expensive to install, but the operational cost is about the same.

Window AC is ugly as you know "White trash style" But VERY cheap. Say if I decided to go all windows AC at my house, it would cost me only 600 dollars to install VERSES central AC cost me $3,000.

So basically, your paying for the look of the system. Pay more, you see less of them.
