someone you know very well or very little that does not matter to me. So, do you reply back on the cell phone or pager when you know they reply to you at the wrong person that you knew the message wasn't intended for you?

:fruit:

Depends...I once got a text message from who was a very pissed off father wondering where his son was in the middle of the night and wanted him to come home. I let him know he got the wrong number and wished him luck in finding him.

I get lot of texted messages that keep asking for more "brah", "whitey", can I take out 30's for more "brah" blah blah... so I keep giving the phone numbers to the FBI guy next to me... he passed to the NARC dept, they will love to find the drugs distributor...

Other than that... I don't bother to reply who texted me by mistake cuz you don't want to send info that actually a wrong person.. it's best to keep it silent.

Nine times out of 10...all calls go to our answering machine....otherwise...if someone calls for "so and so"...we just say "you've got the wrong number"...we've had and do have our share of "anoymous calls"....hang ups....etc. If it's a telemarketer, we just hang up.

Who's "we"?

I think the OP was asking deaf people if they answer a page or a cell phone text message that was accidentally sent to them.

"we", as meaning "my family"...and whenever I do get a VP call and it's the wrong number all I then say is "you've got the wrong number" and click off....sorry for ur confusion!

It's ok if it s about the answer machine on phone too. I didnt think of the phone since i rely on the cell phone (text). LOL

For me, Most of times i don't bother to reply back because what if it leads things worse but if i see something words that are pissy then let them know they got the wrong person to piss off at.

Remmy awhile back....received a call on my VP from California...strange number, tho....I called back...this woman answered....she looked at me very closely.....then said. "why are you calling my husband?...Where in Florida do you live?...you need to leave my husband alone!"....

So, instead of hanging up or saying "you have the wrong number"...I told her that I didn't know her husband or even her!...that she called me first! and she must have me confused with somebody else!....To find that she got my VP number in the VP directory....I did tell her not to call me anymore!...Her problems were not my problems...

If it were text...I would have done the same thing....or that person more than likely would keep on calling, over and over....So I removed my number from the directory!..I had so many calls from all over the USA...people I did not even know....Since I did that, my VP is a lot "quieter"...and only calls from people I know and trust....

Wirelessly posted

I reply, letting the person know they got the wrong number.

even if you know your friend very well and knew the message wasn't for you so you still let your friend know about it? most of time i dont bother to do that but if i know message sounds very important then let friend know because what if friend wants someone else to know right away.

This depends on your relationship with the person who sent it and your relationship with the person for whom it was intended. You have an obligation, if you know the person for whom it was intended, to make sure it gets to them. You can either forward the message to that person or reply back to the person who sent it.

Unless there is a specific reason you don't want to get involved you can handle it one way or the other, reply or forward.

how did you know if the message is intended for a certain person to forward with?

If it's a singular phone call from someone I don't know, I ignore it. If it's a repeated phone call (I've had several that were 15 times a day), I answer and simply say "You have the wrong number. I'm deaf. Bye.". That usually ends the calls.

I've gotten a text only once by mistake. Something like "Where's Jim's house?". I texted him back that it was the wrong number. He replied "thanks!". That was it.

I wouldn't respond to unknown sender for several reason, especially security. Often those who sent e mail, text, etc would spoofing the E mail or text number and assume it is not exist by no response. They would look for those who response and unfortunately sometimes they can trace back to your machine and try to crack it open. They need response because often it comes with IP address where it came from then track back. Other reason, so with response, they can sell my information to spammer or marketers. Returning e mail is close to give them permission to do such. I don't want that.
This applies to videophone, where we see "TEST", or something like that. I am not sure why this happens however I can guess that they are looking for a valid IP address to use as proxy server for any criminal activity or try to crack victim's computer system. I would never try to call back to the unknowns.

Just think this way, a computer hackers or virus writers would send trillions of E mail, and got just a million of responses, would they even bother the rest of UN-responders?, you could guess it easily.

Feeline: Good point, it depends on if the email or text is addressed to someone specifically or if you think you know for whom it was intended. In that case, if you don't know for whom it was intended, it depends on your relationship with the sender. Do you hate that person enough not to interact with them? If you do, then don't bother replying. However, if it is a family member or someone you work with then perhaps you should let them know.

Also, a good point above, if you don't know the sender at all, I wouldn't reply for security reasons.

I have always replied back to let them know it was the wrong person. I never thought it would be any security problem.

That's something new for me to think about. :hmm:

Other things to consider as well. Sometimes sender manipulate the information and send to you as IF it were from one that you know and made everything look like real one. Usually this happens after one reply back to the unknown, and the unknown trace back to you and collect E mail contact list and use them to send back to the victim and phishing or whatever. Other to watch for is E mail that appears to be from your bank and asking for sensitive information. Don't respond this and forward to bank authorities.

That is why I said there is no such thing as fool proof security, because machines understand two things. On and Off that is it, and it takes one to figure out how to break the codes.

Be vigilant and don't sent out sensitive information over the net and you will be fine.

Yes I will say that I am with the IRS and I'm waiting for their quarterly report.

They usually get the idea pretty fast. :afro:

If they're sell someething, I won't respond and filing to complain.
If they send me the sexting by accident. Woohoo! I hit the jackpot!
