If you are the only deaf at your job, do you get treated differently? If so, how?

At my last job, the last 3 years has been miserable, but I won't go into much details but there was this big issue that pizzed me off.

I feel that I was often being singled out if I talk to other co-workers especially when it's work-related. The boss (big power trip) tells me to get back to work or emails me to tell me not to talk. :madfawk:

I felt it was ok for other co workers (all hearing and I was only deaf there) to chat regardless if it was work related or not, but it was not ok for me. UGH!

That is one of a million reasons that I quit my job and am at a much better employment where they are reallllly good with deafies. There are a few deafies working here and they always provide interpreters.
My previous employer never got me an interpreter and always had one coworker write for me. Refused to get me an inteprreter for the WORD class back in 1999 when we went to a new computer system. :bsflag:

Glad to be out of there!

Well, my first job was kind of odd. I felt like they didn't want me to do more in their store when I was done doing something. It was temporary, so it doesn't matter.

Some people will treat me a bit different, but they eventually change to more normal.'

At first some people wonder how they can communicate with you.

I haven't had anything that abnormal since high school. In high school, I felt singled out a lot.

It's wrong for that manager you had to tell you that. I am glad you're somewhere better where you feel comfortable and human.

how terrible to hear about your story. it's great that you quit it - good riddance! The last 3 jobs I have.... I have not been treated differently - just communication-wise.

I really hate it the way people treat each other at work. It isn't just aimed towards people who can not hear, but anyone who is different at all. Recently had that problem my self. Good job leaving, there are plenty of other jobs out there that will appreciate you.

Of all the jobs I've worked at, there was never a job where people treated me differently.

My first job did not treat me differently and I was actually enjoyed my work since 2005 to last June 2008.

Treated differently? Absolutely.

First job 20 years ago was with the government. None of the deaf were allowed to talk. Supervisor came down hard on us. At a fast food restaurant I started with washing dishes, sweeping/mopping the floor. A new shift manager was hired and she made everyone learn relevant signs for the food line. I was prompted to head of food line. She told everyone there was nothing wrong with my brain. I enjoyed the job. Next job is large corporate company. The first job position was good. Good team work. Second job position sucked. The manager was terrible, and people hated working in that department. I would go a whole week without saying a single word to any one. No hellos, good mornings, nothing. Third job position where I am now, is really great. Good hands-off supervisor, great team who values each other’s work. I think they are little too impressed with my ability to live through the day, but they are nice people.
