I'm not an albino. Abinism is a congenital condition. I have an acquired immune system disorder known as vitiligo. It runs the spectrum from a few patches of pigment loss to universal pigment loss. I have the universal type.

If you want geographical location, my mother's grandmother was a German Jew. She immigrated to America. But her ancesters were from Israel. Dark skin, hair, and eyes.

I thought there was a possibility that there were Ashkenazi Jewish ancestors in your family tree but then they would have been in Eastern Europe by your great grandmother's time.

Yes, you are correct.

Yes thats what i mean geographical location. That's so interesting how people travels all over the world. Thanks for sharing.

You guys ought to see me standing in the middle of my dark skinned family!:laugh2: (I have no pigment left as the result of an autoimmune disorder called vitiligo).

Me too! When I was younger it was more of a problem because I had it in patches. It looked strange and other kids teased me and thought I was contagious. My skin was stable until a few years ago when it really took off. Now I have only a few "freckles" of my original pigment left. It's actually nicer than having the white patches... but I'm as white as white gets! I need to be careful outdoors (lots of sunscreen) as I have no protection from the sun.

But I have also been told I have lovely skin. There's nothing like tanning and cigarettes to make you look old!

BTW, my autoimmune disorder is also why my hearing is getting worse. It's like my body says "what can we attack now?"

My skin is very fair. I try not to get burnt cos I go bright red and never tan. I always use highest sun cream protection keep my skin fair and not burnt. No one ever picked on me cos of my skin colour.

Wow! It's actually pretty rare to run into another universal sufferer! Welcome to the club!

I went through the patches stuff as a kid, too. Posted a pic awhile back here showing what it looked like. The nickname I remember most being used was "Pinto Pony".

It was especially tough as a kid. I didn't have a nick name, but I was treated like a leper at times. I remember spending a good part of my morning in jr. high putting makeup on my knees so I would feel normal in gym class.

Is vitiligo hereditary?

My mom has it. I've not noticed it for me yet. I'm just natually very fair skinned.

Are you telling my story?:P

It is. It is a recessive gene disorder. Your father probably did not carry the gene. My brother also had it. I have several cousins from one family that have it. My son has shown no signs of it, but then, like with you, his father did not carry the second gene needed to produce the disorder. However, were he to marry a woman with the gene (not necessarily the disorder), chances are one or more of his children would have it.

I used to be called Spook, not because of skin color but my tendency to be quiet in hearing company. :giggle:

For my family - my mother is the only one to have it. So far, no one else at all. Mom started getting her patches after age 50. Her face is now kind of like a marble slab, mostly white, but some tan. Otherwise, she is totally white from the scalp to the tips of her toes. She ran into problems at work with people calling her a "freak of nature" and having her bosses put her into a closed office. Now, with all her other issues, I am the one to have to put on her sunscreen and make sure she covers up before we go out.

Why are some people so ignorant and unkind. Didn't their mamas rear them right?

:ty: for the info! My sister hasn't shown any signs of it either, so perhaps Dad doesn't have the gene.

What is the difference between carrying the gene but not necessarily the disorder?
