Did You "Hear"?...or "I Heard"....

Several days ago, I watched a video of another deafie talking about this...and asked "why" deafies are using this phrase when they are Deaf/deaf?.....LOL...

There were quite a few responses to this, both negative and positive....then the "shouting match"...(LOL) started...hmmmm

I was called a "moron"...oh well...(have been called worser things)...when I replied that it was just a figure of speech, not to be taken literally. I've used that phrase all my life, even tho' I'm deaf...

How do you guys feel about this?....LOL
 
Some said..."I see"...or "I believe"....or "someone told me"....but never..."I heard".
 
That's a pretty old debate. "I learned" is one that is more acceptable to the people who get upset about it.

Yes it is an old old debate and several of my friends who are Deaf use "I hear" or. "I heard"...it is no big deal to several of us.
 
True, Shel...no big deal and that's what I replied to the poster....but was called a "moran"...:lol:...Haven't seen this debate before....and was asked..."How did you 'hear' it if you are deaf/Deaf?....(and was told I was "hearing")...
 
i dont think i ever heard of this debate. all of my deaf friends says did you hear or heard, it never bother them and it never bothered me at all.
 
And the phrase..."Listen"....:lol:...question was asked..."How do deafies 'Listen'?....since they are Deaf/deaf.....

"Sounds" like people who have too much free time on their hands. And RR, you are definitely not a moron.

:giggle:...I told the man in that video the same thing too..."u got tooo much time on ur hands...and "listen" to me.

When my Deaf friends and use that phrase in ASL, the location is both hands in the handshape of "3" with fingers bent and the thumbs below our eyes instead of on our ears.

However, if we converse using written English be it emails, text, FB or whatever, we do write "I heard..." but we all know that it means with our eyes so that's why it is no big deal to us.
 
I don't know if any one caught this in Switched at Birth when Bay was upset and when she said "LISTEN ME!!" and she was signing like "insane" but using two fingers. It's more of like READ ME!!

Did anyone caught that??

Hmm.. Don't really understand.
What phase did they used?

Not surprise. Many Deaf are highly educated now. Using phase is common.
 
The phrase "listen" just means to stop whatever you're doing and focus entirely on the person speaking. I have people who say that to me and I dont find it unusual and def not offensive
 
Deaf people "hear" with their eyes and "speak" with their hands. Same thing but in a different language.

Well, there you go "someone said, someone told" - technically, this is related to the speech, too :)

If you wanted to be absolutely politically deaf-initely correct, you should rather use form like "someone let me know, someone signed" etc.

I agree with what Shel said :)
