Child Killed Outside Gallaudet. Did Anyone See It?
On July 14, 2007 America's Most Wanted aired an episode that featured the death of a little girl who was killed in a hit and run just outside of Gallaudet University on May 23, 2007 (April 23? Different sources cite different dates). Gallaudet's cameras captured images of the vehicle that killed her, but not who killed her. The full story is on America's Most Wanted website. Additional details are on Gallaudet's website.
Young Girl Struck In Hit-And-Run
Six-year-old Crysta Spencer was killed by a hit-and-run driver.
View LargerA quiet neighborhood in Northeast Washington, DC. Streets lined with trees and rowhouses. Sidewalks where children play, mindless of the dangers that sometimes lurk here.
This is the place that 6-year-old Crysta Spencer, her two baby sisters, and her mother Christina called home.
Crysta's mother felt the streets were treacherous, and she preferred to have Crysta spend her afternoons at the local church. The afterschool program there was meant for older children, but the staff had always made Crysta feel welcome. With her warm sunny disposition, she blended easily with the other kids.
On the afternoon of April 23, 2007, Crysta left her mother inside their rowhouse and was about to cross the street where her friend was waiting for her.
The crosswalk was only a few feet away, but Crysta stepped between two parked cars. As soon as she did, a green SUV barreled down the street. Police say the vehicle struck Crysta and knocked her twenty feet forward.
Even then, cops say the driver didn't stop. He or she just kept going, running right over Crysta, and crushing the life out of her. The green SUV roared off without even stopping.
Crysta was taken to Children's National Medical Center, but it was already too late. Crysta was dead.
Looking for the green SUV was a little like trying to find a needle in a haystack -- until Crysta's mother suggested bringing that haystack to America's Most Wanted.
A Big Break
There were several witnesses to the hit-and-run accident, but the green SUV had tinted windows, and no one got a good look at the driver or recorded the license plate. The investigation might have stalled there.
But cops had two pieces of good fortune.
An off-duty reserve police officer was a couple of blocks away. He saw the green SUV as it was making a hasty getaway, nearly swerving into another vehicle. The officer gave detectives several key details about the green SUV, including the fact that it had a Maryland farm plate and barn doors on the back, not a lift gate.
Police caught another break thanks to surveillance cameras from nearby Gaulludet University. This showed actual images of the vehicle that killed Crysta Spencer.

Tracking The Green SUV
At the urging of Christina Spencer, police brought Crysta's case to AMW -- and now it's up to you to help authorities identify this hit-and-run driver.
They are looking for a large green SUV, either a Chevy Suburban or a GMC manufactured between 1990 and 2000. Police are also trying to find the driver that was cut off by the SUV during its getaway. This person was driving a light-colored car and may be a Chrysler 300 or a Dodge Magnum.
For now, all Christina Spencer and her family can do is wait -- and hope that someone will come forward with information about who killed Crysta.
