Doctors kept giving her antibiotics, thinking she had a lung infection

A 73-year-old woman with dementia had her dentures stuck in her throat for nine weeks after doctors failed to notice she had swallowed them.

Nermin Keating, who lives with her daughter, swallowed the 11-teeth dentures in November, BBC News reported.

Keating's daughter, Umit Maddock, 46, realized her mother's dentures were missing at about the same time she began feeling ill, The Daily Mail reported.

But when she took her mother to the doctor, they kept giving her antibiotics and told her she had a lung infection. Not once, not twice, but four times.

Finally, a doctor spotted the fake teeth in Keating's throat and sent her to the hospital where doctors used a set of forceps to dig them out, The Daily Mail reported.

Two weeks after the dentures were removed, Keating is on a liquid diet and feeling "much happier," according to BBC News.

Peter Hadfield, practice manager at Mount Chambers Surgery, called the case "extraordinary."
