Dems: Texas governor should reject secession

Oh, so, you have been to Texas? How did you know that Texas is too dependent on the rest of the country?

We have oil fields and offshore, Lockheed Martin Co., NASA, coast, Fort Hood, and bigger than the size of France.

I would rather to let Byrdie to explain about dependent on rest of country, it could be means crops, gas delivers, businesses, plenty of federal owned property, oil field and much more.

Oil field and oil refineries are owned by US government (federal) and they are on federal properties, it means Texas couldn't own it after secession because federal paid and own them, if you want both of them to be on TX property then it could face military action to secure the oil field and oil refineries, it's pretty too much for TX to take care of it.

Speaking of civil war, it would be far too much for Texas and would defeat by US, just like compare to China vs. Taiwan and don't want to be happen but there's possibly for US to have military action to conquer the state capitol without make huge damage.

According to Texan governor's comment
Perry emphasized Thursday that he is not advocating secession but understands why Americans may have those feelings because of frustration with Washington, D.C. He said it's fine to express the thought. He offered no apology and did not back away from his earlier comments.

It's just political talk, just like similar to secession of WA, OR and BC into Republic of Cascadia and not going to be happen, you would have get deal with government that you don't like because US is democracy and multi-parties could have compete against other parties, we have republican and democrat presidents in past, such as turn in decade. We had alot of error in past, including high spending and would going to be settle out, you could have republican president in next 4 to 8 years.

Republicans are facing decline at this time due unpopular of Bush admin and blame on Bush admin for doing poor job to our country and made republican looks bad, however republican will become strength in next 4 to 8 years after get worn off from Bush admin.

Both of republican and democrat aren't majority party since most Americans are independent voters.

Secession isn't solve any problem but more risky.

Secessionists are usually crybabies that are upset with Obama. That movement draws in the hardcore racists and people opposed to any form of social programs and taxation.

Where were these people when Bush was in office? How come we never had any tea parties when the Patriot Act passed?

Not really, the issue for secession has related with taxes and spending, not racist or something.

Texan Guy, speaking of up to Texans, I had researched on some website and only less than 15% of Texans support secede from US.

Foxrac did a wonderful explanation because not only the oil fields are owned by the Federal government--so is NASA, Fort Hood, Fort Bliss, etc, etc.

Secondly if the Federal government pulled out--Texas wouldn't able to defend itself--especially from that neighbor south of the Rio Grande. :cool2:

I had the same question and I asked that on my friend's facebook wall when she posted a note about this issue.

I agree with others...I doubt Texas will secede. If it does, it could become ugly.

Yep. They'd be sandwiched between a rock and a hard place - especially if the Mexican government collapses under the drug cartels. It'd be folly to secede.

I remember the same old shit happening back in the late 1990s, all this talk about Texas secession, and it never happened back then, and it won't happen this time. Not enough people actually want to do it...the governor was just throwing out an insane suggestion and nothing more. He didn't say he WANTED to secede...he just said he would not be surprise if there was some talk of some people wanting secession. But...nope, not gonna happen.

It's not good but Obama need seriously consider about tax issue and need achieve on tax reform that Americans could understand so better, however some right wing organization, such as AFA are enjoy to brainwash the conservative Americans.

A deaf republican has brilliantly explained why tea baggers are creating controversy for NOTHING:

When Clinton was in office, the highest income tax bracket was 39.6%. Bush slowly lowered it to 39.1% in 2001, then 38.6% in 2002. Between 2003 and 2009, it was 35%. No fanfare. No complaints. Obama raised it back to Clinton's levels and I'm hearing of tea parties in protest of this increase. Did these bitter protesters look at the Clinton-era 28% income tax for the middle class which is 25% under Obama? The lowest bracket under Clinton was 15% and it is now 10% under Obama. Clearly, these people can't be pleased and it is getting to the point where it is ridiculous. Check this website about historical tax brackets.

There are shrill cries of people threatening to move to Switzerland or another country that's believed to have lower taxes than our outrageously high taxes. It's laughable to say the least. Okay, why don't we compare income taxes. I came across this great website.

This website used the 2004 data and is based on a €100,000 income (roughly $125,000). You've heard Switzerland is a tax haven? Not even close. What about Luxembourg? Nope. The amount is what you take home.

€64,510 in Geneva Canton of Switzerland
€69,828 in Zürich Canton of Switzerland
€61,174 in Luxembourg (all the same throughout)
€69,202 in Illinois, USA
€72,153 in Texas, USA (no State income tax in Texas)
€51,843 in Germany (all the same throughout)
€59,982 in France (all the same throughout)

Since it was based on an €100,000 ($125,000) per year income, both Obama and Bush would have the tax at 28% so there is no difference between 2004 and 2010 for these people. That has not stopped people from screaming bloody murder over a paltry increase. Why didn't they do that when Clinton bumped up the taxes? Did I mention Germany and Switzerland do not allow for deductions on mortgage interest while we do? We're far more generous than what these ingrates would believe.

What about gasoline? In the so-called tax haven of Zurich, Switzerland, gasoline is $4.50 a gallon. A gallon of gas in Germany will set you back $5.68. The only reason the European gasoline is getting a little cheaper is because our dollar has risen 40%. And we're paying $2.50 a gallon. A year ago, it was almost $6.00 in Switzerland and $8.00 in Germany, and we were paying $3.00. This is reliable info here, and I can vouch for that after being there quite a few times.

Do you want a new car? Okay, how about a Volkswagen Passat 2.0T with automatic transmission, air conditioning, power windows, and so forth. The retail price is $28,300 in the U.S. for a sedan according to Edmunds. According to the German MSN.de Autos, the cheapest VW Passat with a 2.0T is the Comfortline which fetches for €30,400 (or $39,000) without automatic transmission. In Switzerland, the Swiss car4you prices the 2.0T FSI Comfortline at Fr42,150 or $36,652 without the automatic transmission. The automatic transmission is another $1,400 while we already have it in ours. Let's not forget the Passat is made in Germany and had to travel 6,000 miles to the U.S.. Switzerland is right on the German border. Yet, despite the import taxes and everything, we manage to have it cheaper than these two countries.

Is that going to stop the stupid people from telling me they're going to move to Switzerland? No, let them, we need less stupid people. However, that in no way means I am a fan of Obama's.

Thanks, you are best man. :thumb:

Unfortunately, there's plenty of Americans don't understand about Obama's tax policy, however I do understand about high spending and I hopefully government would pay off without own us to pay their mistake, plus wartime does cost alot, it's really big spending that I had seen.

I'm going love with value of republican.

Apparently, Texas is already a foreign country:

State Dept. Listed Texas as Foreign Country

By FRANK HEINZ

On Wednesday, Texas Gov. Rick Perry hinted at Texas secession at an Austin Tea Party rally. On Thursday, state Dems were telling him to knock it off.

But it looks like Perry wasn't alone in his desire for Texas to reemerge as a sovereign nation.

On Friday, the U.S. Department of State had Texas among a list of 16 foreign countries visited by Secretary Hillary Clinton last month, according to The Huffington Post.

Clinton was in the "state" to accept an award from Planned Parenthood in Houston and to appear at Dallas' Women's Museum -- and not to work on diplomatic relations.

On the list, Texas was sandwiched between Turkey and Switzerland. The state department has since edited their list, but The Huffington Post still has a screen grab available here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/thenewswire/archive/Picture6.html
