Deaf Woman's Dog Alerts Her To Fire

MESA, Ariz. -- A deaf woman's dog alerted her to a fast-moving fire at her apartment complex Saturday where flames destroyed eight units and left 36 people homeless, including 21 children.

Elizabeth Harrison and her daughter who is also deaf escaped the burning building safely.

Harrison said her neighbor who is also deaf began banging on her door to no avail in an attempt to warn her. Harrison said her dog heard the banging and alerted her of the danger.

"So I came out," she said.

Mesa fire crews called for backup before they even arrived on the scene just by judging the plume of smoke coming from the building near Main Street and Dobson Road, said Capt. John Jayne of the Mesa Fire Department.

"Everything is pretty close together," Jayne said. "The wood siding makes it difficult and it goes up very fast."

Mesa fire spokesman Bob Loomey said fire damaged at least two of the complex's 10 buildings.

Another resident, Miguel Chavez, was with his younger brother and sister at the complex on Saturday. When he took out the garbage, he said he saw the smoke.

"It smells like something was on fire," Chavez said. "I turned around and see all of the fire. I took take my sister and brother out and warned my neighbor."

No one was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fire crews from Chandler, Scottsdale, Tempe and Gilbert assisted in fighting the blaze.

Cool dog! Snickers was trained to do the same thing.

awww.. Dogs know how to sniff out dangers for their love ones.

I think it is great! I am sure my dogs will do the same for me.

Wow, that's amazing. The Deaf woman is lucky to be alive when her dog alerted her of door banging.

Glad everyone are safe and alive from that Apartment.
