Deaf Woman Struck By School Bus In Lawrenceville - News Story - WPXI Pittsburgh

A 70-year-old deaf woman was hospitalized after being struck by a school bus in Lawrenceville early Tuesday morning.

The accident happened near the intersection of Butler Street and McCandless Avenue.

Police said the bus driver didn’t yield to the pedestrian crosswalk and was turning at the intersection when he struck Elaine Schenck.

Schenck, who witnesses said was moaning on the ground after being hit, was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, where she is undergoing knee surgery. Her condition hasn’t been released.

The victim also suffered multiple contusions and abrasions and had to get stitches in her head. However, police said her injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Investigators said the bus was on its way to pick up Conroy Education Center students when the accident happened. No students were on the bus at the time of the accident.

Police said they don’t believe the woman being deaf played a part in the crash, and they plan on citing the driver.

I think they meant it was irrelevant that she didn't hear the bus; the bus driver was in the wrong for not yielding to a pedestrian in the crosswalk.

In D.C., there were several accidents like that over the past couple years or so where bus drivers trying to hurry to meet a schedule turned a corner too quickly and hit pedestrians. Had nothing to do, in any of those cases, with the pedestrians not paying attention or not being able to hear or see (since they could); it was the bus drivers who were totally at fault.

What does it mean? Does it mean she pretended being deaf?

No, it means her hearing loss was not a factor in the crash. It wouldn't have mattered if she was deaf or not because she would have been struck by the bus, no matter what.

that true but she didnt watch out for bus but im sure she can sued driver

Over here crosswalks give the pedestrians right of way, you can't run out into the road but if you are already crossing the traffic must give way. We also have right of way if vehicles are turning into a street. You don't have to keep looking to stay out of the way, common courtesy also means drivers would slow down for a crossing!

That's the theory here, too, but some bus drivers don't look, are in a hurry, whatever, and end up hitting people.

You know what scares me: the same driver that failed to yield right of way and hit this poor woman was on the way to pick up students from a school.:cool2:
