deaf products I should invest in?

I no longer really use the telephone anymore due to not being able to hear....and I can't hear the alarm in my house etc. As a deaf person what should I have in regards to deaf products? Any suggestions:):ty:
 
I don't know if it's available in Canada, but you might like a Captel phone (or use WebCaptel). I don't use a regular phone anymore either, but with the Captel I can make calls like ordering a pizza or talking to a customer support rep. or something. I don't like to use it for having an informal conversation with a friend though, since the delay and errors tend to throw off the flow of conversation to the point where it's awkward, but for more formal calls, it's a great tool.
 
Smartphone and or computer (obviously.) A phone flasher/intercom flasher if you're in an apartment. Some keep their TTYs; I got one, but I haven't used it in 5 years, but I like keeping it in case of "emergencies." A webcam or a videophone. A bedshaker. A fire-alarm that vibrate. Maybe a doorbell.

That's about it for me.

Good lord, you oldster you! You can order pizza and talk to a customer support rep. while typing on your computer. I do it all the time.

Even if you don't sign, or your friend doesn't, you can use Skype, and part of this is computer to computer is free, and there is a place where you can just type the conversation. :shock: Catch up to 2010!:shock:

And Alicia, I recommend a doorbell that flashes light. And a bed shaking alarn.

You can check the Canadian Hearing Society (CHS) where the assistive devices are being sold via their website or office. If you order a product that is worth more than $400 each, Ontario government will pay 75 percent of the cost. You will pay only 25 percent as part of the Assistive Devices Program (ADP). :)

Ottawa has CHS office on 2197 Riverside Drive, Suite 600 near Billings Bridge Plaza on Bank Street. They have assistive and techncial devices on display so you can go there to check them before making decisions to order which one.

:shock: I didn't realize they paid 75%... i should look into this more....


also, one thing i have (while at school anyway) is an "Alertmaster 6000".. quite convenient.. the school provides it for me, but its and alarm clock with bedshaker and flashing light, doorbell, phone flasher, audio alarm alerter, etc. It great!

i was looking into this type of setup for the house ..the alertmaster i believe as well...but it is QUITE expensive and i don't have the money to even pay for a bit of it right now...fire alarms seeing as they have to be in every house shud be provided free to the deaf I think. I know i need an alarm and will go to CHS for that and i definitely need something for the door..cuz i never hear it i will also look into the webphone or captel thing you talked about...we can order online with some pizza places but many still require to call which is the biggest pain in the ass

The captel phone is good for late deafened people because only half of the conversation is printed out and you can just speak back.

There are plenty of pizza places, restaurants, and companies, etc. that do not have any type of online interface and in those cases the only option in the past would have been to use a TTY or relay. The Captel phone has been a great tool, and the technology is more recent than you think.

And Alicia, I only did a little searching on the net, but I don't think captel is available in Canada. :( time to petition your government!
 
ya don't think it is either but i think we have something similar ...i will ask jennyb cuz she knows all about that stuff since she lives here

So I support the things that do business online. So there. :mad2:

I think you should invest in something that you can grow with. Think 10 years down the line. I have the alert master which is now clarity and got it for the alarm clock and vp. Later I added the baby signaler. Much later I bought more receivers so I can see the alerts in more then one room.
 
hmm thanks radioman:) i don't have the funds right now but i will look into it...I know our gov't will pay 75 percent so thats good:) just need the funds for the other 25 haha
 
Have you tried Ebay for BRK Electronics Strobe Fire alarm for deaf. I bought pair of these for $40.

Also you can ask friends who lives in USA that may have spare BRK Electronics Strobe fire alarm to mail it to you that they got free from Local fire station and moved to another Apt or house in same area and they got another one. The "old" ones that deafie took it with them no longer use for house because Fire Dept told them it's better to have new one on their "new" home. I got another 2 free from my friends and it still works great.

Pardon my stupid question, :crazy: Does Canada use 120v for homes/ apartments?? Just in case

i am trying to find a cool shirt that I could wear as well i know there is a site that has a bunch but haven't found one i want yet...and I would LOVE a car deal thing for my window..but i've never seen one before...

And to purplecatty i am not sure how many volts...maybe my gf can tell ya lol
