Deaf man convicted of first-degree fetal murder for the death of his unborn son

In the three years that followed, DNA tests would show that it was, in fact, Poplin's own unborn child that he killed. A trial would reveal no evidence of infidelity by his girlfriend of seven years, and a jury would convict him of the rarely prosecuted charge of first-degree fetal murder for the death of his unborn son.

On Friday, Sacramento Superior Court Judge Greta Curtis Fall meted out the final act of justice in the case: She sentenced the 32-year-old Poplin to 50 years to life in prison for the killing.

That's after he serves 12 years for corporal injury and assault with a deadly weapon on his girlfriend, Vanessa Roberts, with whom Poplin already had fathered a child.
