Inmate found hanged in his Montgomery County jail cell | Houston & Texas News | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

An inmate awaiting trial on capital murder charges was found dead early Friday, hanging in his cell from a bed sheet tied to the bars at the Montgomery County Jail.

Earl Handy Jr., 39, who was deaf, was in a segregation cell for medical reasons before his body was discovered around 3 a.m., the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies administered CPR before Handy was taken to Conroe Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead just after 4 a.m.

Willis police had charged Handy with capital murder in the January stabbing death of his wife, Donna Handy, 34, and with aggravated assault in the knife attack on Joseph Taylor in January.

Handy and his wife had been separated at the time of the killing. Police described Taylor as Donna Handy's lover.

Handy was accused of stabbing Taylor three times in the upper body with a kitchen knife on Jan. 16 before stabbing his wife at least once in the chest.

An autopsy on Handy will be conducted in Dallas. The sheriff's major crimes unit and the Texas Rangers are investigating the hanging death, officials said.

This is an evidence that he does not want to face lifetime prison. Rather be dead, what a easy way out. That is why I oppose death penalty.

Which is easier, sit and stare at bars for the rest of life or dead? You decide.

Seems to be a crime of passion. Neverless, he did take the easy way out. So, he cheated a slower death, right up unto the end.
But, yes I still support the death penalty. Not many criminals have the balls to do what this man did (kill himself), they'd rather sit in a cell, 3 meals a day, clean clothes and bedding, etc. And add on years before they are executed, still a bigger chance of them getting off with protests from the bleeding hearts.

Don't put the wagon before the horse just yet which you're prone to do so. We still haven't had the full picture yet as to why he was placed in a separate holding cell. The article mentioned for medical reasons; perhaps it was psychological?

I think it is a crime of passion like rockin'robin said. I think he felt that he made a very big mistake on killing his wife. He was just jealous of finding out his wife had her lover. He did not like it one bit at all. But while he was in separate cell, he might have miss his wife so much and knew he will never get out anyway. He decided to kill himself to be with his wife spiritually if that was what he was thinking about. He was a deranged person if that is what the medical conditions was. He need to talk with the specialist who might help him understand his actions of why he did that. That is my opinion. :hmm:

:gpost: I think that is probably right and had such feelings of guilt that he killed himself.

The "medical condition" is his obvious deafness, for which he was placed in ad. seg! Not mental incompetence. I also worked in a Texas prison for 3 yrs. They will not place a deaf inmate/offender in the cell w/ another. Same goes for county jail. It's for their protection...

"Handy, who was deaf, had not been on suicide watch but was put on administrative segregation to protect him because of his deafness," Lt. Bill Bucks said. (Conroe Newspaper/Courier)

I read these posts and I had to speak up. I am Donna's friend and have been in a relationship w/ one of her children's fathers for the past 3 1/2 years. The child is only 7 yrs old and he and his 4 yrs old brother (the 4 yrs old is fathered by Earl; the 7 yrs old fathered by my boyfriend) are amazing kids. I really pray for both families (Donna's and Earl's), but this whole situation is surreal! Her life was taken whether by accident or purposely, and it's ridiculous that excuses are made in such a situation. She moved on w/ her life & her estranged husband couldn't take it, for whatever reasons. Still, no one has the right to take another life! I didn't come here for a debate; I agree w/ some of the posts. I'm just stating the facts: these children have lost a beautiful mother (inside out), and no one has "won" in this situation. Just sad. We miss you Donna!
