Hey, I'm sort of a lurker here but I have something I'm doing for school and want to let people know about it. :)

I'm a HoH high schooler (alas, mainstreamed & don't know anyone my age who is Deaf/HH, but taking ASL from school soon and hoping to get involved more) and for my Sociology class, I'm seeing if the rate of depression/mental illness is more prominent with D/HH individuals than it is with hearing people. I have an online survey that I am using for responses, I currently have 46 replies and want at least 50.

Thanks for checking this out, let me know if you've got any questions or suggestions. :)

I am diagnosed with Depression but it really has nothing much to do with my environment. It has really to do with the chemical imbalance in my brain. That what most mental illness comes from anyway. Depression is physical illness, just like diabetes and asthma.

Yeah, it's true. However, I think it really is more common among deaf people who are alone or the only ones in their life or family to be deaf. If it was one deaf student growing up for years in a mainstream school with no other deaf students, then I could understand that happening. I knew one girl here at RIT who was always going to mental hospitals. She was the only deaf kid in her family and the only deaf kid in her high school. Coming to RIT was too much for her and she was not used to seeing so many deaf people so she got easily depressed.

JesKlu, I have genetically caused depression and I'd have to say that while I may have been predisposed to it, I think that enviromental influences can really influence depression. I mean our lives are FILLED with therapy appointments. So as a result we're getting the message that we are "broken" and not as good as the majority (hearing in this case) How can a dhh develop good self esteem when they are CONSTANTLY being corrected on their speech or teased about the way they talk or yelled at b/c they have trouble modualting their voice or whatever? There's also the fact of parents who want a healthy normal kid and who don't accept their dhh/otherwise disabled kid(s)
