Deaf Article -Some in deaf community against implants

You guys need to read this article because not only is the story in itself is awesome, but the comments below is making me fuming because of how ignorant some of these hearing people are.

I'm the guy as Deaf Reader that posted some of my own two cents of what I think of what these hearing people are saying. One post is long, so my apologies if any of you get bored with my long winded drivel.

You might want to jump into the band wagon and give a thought or two in regards to the article as well as what the comments are saying below it.

Warning, some of the comments will probably rile you up, but also laugh at how stupid and ignorant some of these people really are.

There is it again.... hearing people saying that quality of life is better when one can hear. This is exactly what I was talking about in that other thread when I vented.

If people would stop looking or thinking like that, then maybe deaf people who are sign language users wouldnt face so much discrimination!

Agreed. The oralists keep telling us those attitudes don't exist, but there seems to be overwhelming evidence that they do. The ignorance in some of the replies to this article is indeed frightening.

Welcome abord the AD, Yiz. I am with you on this. It seems that we have proof that Deafness is a very minor disability (Martha's Vineyard) but they continue turning deaf ears (pun intend!) to that. I learned to speak and still I feel discriminated at my old job. I won't be surprised if a CI implantee still get discriminated at work.

My biggest reason against CI in children is death due to meningitis/anesthesia complication/surgery complication. My second reason is how the deaf kid is going to view onself, especially if the child is not allowed to learn ASL.

Also the deaf education in general stink high time, at least in my time ('60s). I have high hopes for the Bi-Bi Method. I see this should be for every deaf kids, CI or not. It is about time for them to move all the way over to ASL. TC is just too close to oral than to ASL.

I was reading on the Milan Conference (or Congress) and it started on Sept. 6th and concluded on 11th in 1880 (The Congress) which devasted the Deaf World. I consider this to be our 9/11. (Get it? the date Sept 11, 1880)

Back to the subject....
CI is another blow to the Deaf World but I hope they will see that it is not a great thing for kids who were born deaf. It works fine for the kids who lost their hearing after they learn to speak as they are of hearing culture, not deaf culture. CI for those who were born deaf is what I imagine this: A blind person who can see for the first time and accepts what he see as a fact - for an example, he really sees green but thinks it is red. How can he fine-tunes the colors if he doesn't know what the colors are supposed to look like. That is how I view CI for the deaf kids who really can't fine-tune what they hear because they really don't know how it is supposed to sound like.

Life is better being deaf imo. You don't have to deal with all the noises. So much more peaceful being deaf.

Dupree and Unger worry about the ramifications of cochlear implants for the deaf community and deaf culture. They think if more children receive cochlear implants, less will learn sign language or be a part of deaf organizations.

Or no signs at all, or being no part of the deaf community, I agree with this part of the article. I've seen the movie "Sound and Fury" I'm so surprised to see that most of those hearing parents had no knowledge of the deaf culture, not all that, they did not want to learn signs either.

If some hearing people wants to labeled us anti-CI, go right ahead they just don't understand the reason beyond, it all. They only care about what they want, not what the deaf child wants.
