Something tells me I have too much time on my hands. :P

Instead of focusing on the deaf specifically. Why not create more visual material. Work on getting your message across using verbiage that would be understood by the widest audience possible. Deaf people do not like to feel like they are being played down to. I've gone to religious events where they found out I was deaf and got all excited... They got me the deaf literature, they got me personal escorts, someone with me at all times clapping their hands and making sure I knew exactly where everyone was I the song and so on and so on and on and on and.... OMG... I felt l like an invalid the entire time. And if I resisted, they got angry... Eventually I just left. Never said anything to them. Just left. I imagine my departure left an unfulfilled hole in their hearts. Not to worry, I got over it! :)

My point? We are not children... Even those of us with English as a second language. Don't don't treat us as such.

Did you notice - AD ranks higher on that list than NY Times! Way to go folks.

Anyhoo... Mactoph - First - as you are now aware - the idea of going "Ohhh hold up... Lets cater to the Deaf people. Their literacy is.. ya know..." already is bad enough as it is.

Second - if you were going to cater to people's literacy levels - may as well re-do everything you have. 10th grade reading level is simply too high for our nation. Average hearing student graduates with 8th grade reading level.

I kind of wonder if the way literacy levels are measured has all that much real value.

When I was in school all teachers cared about was

A) How fast you read,

B) How much you understood of what you read.

You got a result that looks something like 90% comprehension at 100 words per minute.

At home my mother was teaching me to pause and question everything I read.

Did I agree? Why? Did the writer use the best argument for their case? What arguments against their case did they NOT use. Did the writer stack the argument in their own favor? How. And so on.

My mother was of the opinion that one book read correctly was of more value than ten comprehended quickly.

Assuming my mother is correct, there is very little worth in the current measurement of reading levels. In fact it might be measuring the wrong things.

I just did an experiment... made a one liner of a sentence that made sense with everyday words.

17 on the fog is the max, while 12 on the Flesch-Kincaid is also the max.

so that test is easily manipulated.

Get over yourself, Fuzzy. You can be so annoying with your cater to the audists attitude.

Audist???? oh please,
YOU get over yourself

for the man was asked by the very deaf readers to lower the English level in the paper,
and was informed by the very Deaf of the level of the Deaf literacy.
He simply came her to find out and eventually to CONFIRM if this is true,
and what 'welcome' did he get???

certainly not the warm one you boasted about so recently

Me- on the contrary, I tried my best to explain the difference between ASL English and the written English and how it can be mistaken for illiteracy.
For the poster has asked "what is the truth??" ....
But have you answered???

I tried to maintain the discussion at civil level,
and tried my best to help to EDUCATE the poster what the truth is in what he had asked for.
I did not screamed at him in bewildering "how dare you" as you did in a very Jerry Springer way
or should I say- very Jillio way. nope, sorry- no, wasn't me.

It's just about what you ooze. We see it in every post you make. I pray that one day you see it and realize.

I have a suggestion for you - your time would be better spent taking a good long look at yourself.

Yes, I did. Us poor illiterate deafies actually rank higher than NY Times.

I should try that too. According to a word processing software, I could write at 12th level years ago..

Although I can read around 600 words per minute, I force myself to slow down to make sure I really understand the subject when it's about something important.
