Arrest in deadly shooting near Gallaudet
By Peter Hermann

D.C. police have arrested an 18-year-old man and charged him with second-degree murder while armed in a shooting that occurred earlier this month near Gallaudet University.

Kevon Austin of Southwest was arrested on a warrant Saturday, police said in a statement. He could be arraigned Monday afternoon in D.C. Superior Court.

Police said Austin is charged with shooting Gregory Darnell Troxler, 21, of Northeast, on the afternoon of Oct. 10 in the 1100 block of 8th St. NE. Troxler was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooting, which occurred about 3:50 p.m., drew attention because of its proximity to the university. D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier went to the scene and said a police officer heard the shots and rushed to an alley where he found the mortally wounded young man.

The location was not visible to one of the main entrances to Gallaudet, located on the other side of Florida Avenue, but some students wandered over and stood at the crime-scene tape.

Lanier said the shooting had nothing do with the university but did not elaborate. The police statement issued Saturday after the arrest also did not reveal a motive.

How did he get shot in a gun free zone? I thought it was illegal to carry a gun around Gallaudet University - well, in DC for that matter too. :hmm:

I don't think the criminals got that memo. Just sayin...

no it says near gallaudet, not on gallaudet campus. It did happen several times in the past. During my time at gallaudet, someone was stabbed outside of gallaudet campus.

Sorry, let me clarify, I meant to say the area around Gallaudet is a gun free zone. In fact, I think all of DC is but I am not sure. But, I do know that the area surrounding the campus is a gun free zone (and coincidentally, the most violent crimes happen in gun free zones :hmm: )

I also remember the violent crimes in the area when I attended. There was someone pumping gas at the Hess station and was shot in the head. It was captured on video too. The guy walked up to him as he was pumping gas, and shot him execution style. Nobody at Hess stopped what they were doing ... they all acted like it was normal every day thing (because it is).

yeah but criminials did not get the damn message. Thats why I said, outside of gallaudet campus is not that safe. Lucky students that they all have subway that right next to gallaudet. My time i had to walk outside of gallaudet campus and grabbed the bus. If I missed the gallaudet shuttle bus to union station.

It should be more than couple of stories. Like it happened to me that some kids threw the rocks at me on 8th NE when I walked on 8 th NE at night. no i did not report to cops.

Also someone broke into my friends car and stole the radio that was near gallaudet and it was on 8th ne.

Criminals carry illegal guns.

Were you interested in discussing how awful is it that guns exist?

It won't be awful when a cop comes to save your life. It isn't awful in Alaska when it's you and angry bear and no one to help you, it's not awful in the hands of a law abiding citizen that comes out alive from a perp with a lengthy rap sheet. Law enforcement have killed one another with guns because of love triangles, it sure doesn't stop people in Asia from killing children with knives and it does nothing in Jamaica and many African countries where the machete is the weapon of choice. If someone wants to get a weapon - any weapon, they will...blaming the gun is like blaming spoons for America's obesity problem.

Does DC have high crimes? If so, the cops are not doing a good job there.

The crime rate in DC is much improved than in 80's and 90's, also the murder rate has dropped to 108 by end of 2011.

Don't blame on cops for high crime, but it is more issue with society.

I don't disagree with this, but to be fair, crime has dropped in all areas since the 80's and 90's due to better laws against street crime.

and change in society.

The crime rate in US is just lowest, same level as 1960's.

Criminals carry illegal guns.

Are you saying that only criminals will have guns in a gun free zone?

How is that possible? :dunno: Don't they know the law? It is supposed to be "safe" in a gun free zone!!

Ok, ok ... I even have PROOF that gun free zones are supposed to be safe - and lots and lots of sources to PROVE to any doubters out there that aren't too awful sure what the point is of having gun free zones so here you go:

Strategy: Gun-Free School Zones — National Crime Prevention Council

Establishing policies prohibiting the possession of guns in schools and within a set distance of school buildings helps to secure schools from gun-related violence and crime.

See?!! right there! BAM! It is a magical invisible barrier designed to keep guns out!!

(so how the heck did the criminal get inside this barrier?)

The strategy recognizes the inherent danger of concealed firearms in the possession of gang members, drug traffickers, and fearful students. A survey by the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that about 135,000 guns are brought into schools every day. According to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, nearly 20 percent of all offenders arrested in 1991 while carrying guns were juveniles.

Whew! I am so relieved that this strategy recognizes the danger of concealed carry in the possession of gang members, drug traffickers, and ...... fearful students. That is obviously why they do not want law abiding citizens to conceal carry. Wow ... they are so smart.

Localities designate school buildings, school bus stops, and the perimeter area around school buildings as weapon-free zones, where possession or use of a firearm, knife, or other weapon carries additional penalties for the offender. Youths caught with a gun in the zone are usually suspended (in some cases expelled) by school officials and may face criminal charges. Like the drug-free school zone concept, this strategy aims to deter offenders from carrying and using a gun or knife in the zone by imposing increased penalties. The policies may displace such activities to other areas of the community. Even so, school and law enforcement officials believe that the policies are very effective in securing areas frequented by school-aged youth and staff while school is in session.

The designated areas are marked by special signage and publicized throughout the community. In addition to enhanced sanctions, most school districts where such policies are in place also have implemented antiviolence and gun education programs to reinforce among students the belief that carrying guns and knives to school is not safe and should not be tolerated by them and their peers.

Ok, so how the heck do these offenders keep getting inside this invisible barrier? Even though it is marked by signs? How come they don't turn around and just walk away?
