It really is a crisis. Since manufacturing jobs in the US are going to shrink over time, the best prospect for the country's economy is an educated population, and we can't have that if schools are letting students down to this extent.

I think overall schools need longer hours and higher demands of their students, and teaching should be a higher-esteem job like how it is typically viewed in places like Scandinavia or Asia.
