I m going to be on the train for 27 hours straight next month. Of course, I need a cook there to give me food there or I will starve to death!

Well train has stops and a 30 minute layover. Get a burger at mc donalds and hop back on a train. OR fix sandwhiches from home pack em in a bag and eat when you feel like it.
 
Why not build a casino on the train?
That way I can play some games.
So I won't be so bored.

Casino can help Amtrak financially.

I am not interested in going to McDonalds or bringing along sandwiches that will go bad in 27 hours. I prefer to dine in the dining room.

You have to realize it is 27 HOURS! It is not like Im hopping to Seattle or Boise on the train but going over 1,000 miles on the train.

Thats why it cost $400 on a train. Cause too many workers they gotta pay.

Hey Meg
It was my first experience with Amtrak last July with children. DF paid for us 750 dollar with Deaf discount price. I brought Foods and Drinks Backpack with me to feed children. U can grab Micowave Foods like Chef Boyone (sp) cans and go to Lodge room. Attandent will heat it up for you. U can bring your own drinks and foods in train. I did bring 7 or 8 bags along with me. I know that is alot! Dining room is expensive food which Chef cook real foods and have seat table for you and kids. So better for you to bring Foods your own or Lodge room to buy foods like snack, pizza, hotdog, drink, breakfast foods, and Ramon. Alittle pricy of foods in Lodge.
Just give you an idea to save money to bring foods/drinks.

Ahh thanks for your advice! I havent taken Amtrak to California since I was a youngster. So I am excited about this trip. Will definitely use your advice :)

But what is Deaf Discount????? They give you discount because you are deaf?

Details About Discounts

Amtrak offers a rail fare discount to passengers with disabilities. To receive the discount you must book your reservation by telephone or at a ticket counter. Sorry, discounts are not available when you book online.

You must also provide written documentation of disability at the ticket counter and when boarding the train.

Acceptable documentation includes:

Transit system ID card
Membership card from a disabilities organization
Letter from a physician
You may not combine this discount with other discount programs. Please ask your reservations sales agent for further details about restrictions.

U can ask for Discount for deaf, wheelchair, and Disabilities.
Hope that is help you more information from amtrak.com or travel agency or contract with amtrak from phone.
Plus other things i want remind you to talk with Amtrak rep or Travel agency to find out how many baggages that you can allowed bring along include your children. I did brought Stroller, carseat, baggages under Amtrak. I brought Pillows, Food backpack, and Kiddie's backpack (toys, color) with me.
