Cuban Deaf-Blind Children Regain Hearing - Prensa Latina

Nearly 20 Cuban deaf and blind children have heard sounds again thanks to the implant of an electronic device, a modern technology revolutionizing the world of profound neuro-sensorial auditory deficiency.

The patients received the benefits of Cuban medicine at La Pradera International Health Center in Havana.

Three years ago, medical authorities carried out a study to determine the number of children suffering from the disease and the appropriate treatments to improve their quality of life, said Nimia Perez, expert on the teaching of children with hearing problems.

The result was this implant for profoundly deaf children, who have not solved their problems through the conventional prosthesis, a technique usually applied in patients under 14 years old.

Experts consider this technology has revolutionized the world in the last 20 years and has become an essential aid for the treatment of some types of deafness.

The device turns sounds and speaking signs into electric signals and thus partially restore or installs the hearing perception.

Some of my Cuban friends would laugh at the phrase "benefits of Cuban medicine". They told me about the government medical system there causing more malnutrition, sickness and birth defects than what it "healed". Children didn't get routine vaccinations, babies were fed diluted formula, young children got diluted powdered milk, needles were reused, and poor people often received experimental drugs and treatments without knowledge.

So, 20 kids got implants. What's going on with the hundreds (thousands?) of other deaf kids in Cuba? I suspect the 20 who got the implants were carefully screened and showcased for maximum propaganda value.

Thanks for the link. As always, you keep us informed about Deaf news around the world. :ty:
