Here's something that I saw tonight on Yahoo. I wasn't sure if I should post it here or in the 'On Topic Debates' section. He's seen plenty of war in 90 years.

Cronkite: Time for U.S. to Leave Iraq
By DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer
Sun Jan 15, 6:47 PM ET

Former CBS anchor Walter Cronkite, whose 1968 conclusion that the Vietnam War was unwinnable keenly influenced public opinion then, said Sunday he'd say the same thing today about Iraq.

"It's my belief that we should get out now," Cronkite said in a meeting with reporters.

Now 89, the television journalist once known as "the most trusted man in America" has been off the "CBS Evening News" for nearly a quarter-century. He's still a CBS News employee, although he does little for them.

Cronkite said one of his proudest moments came at the end of a 1968 documentary he made following a visit to Vietnam during the Tet offensive. Urged by his boss to briefly set aside his objectivity to give his view of the situation, Cronkite said the war was unwinnable and that the U.S. should exit.

Then-President Lyndon Johnson reportedly told a White House aide after that, "If I've lost Cronkite, I've lost Middle America."

The best time to have made a similar statement about Iraq came after Hurricane Katrina, he said.

"We had an opportunity to say to the world and Iraqis after the hurricane disaster that Mother Nature has not treated us well and we find ourselves missing the amount of money it takes to help these poor people out of their homeless situation and rebuild some of our most important cities in the United States," he said. "Therefore, we are going to have to bring our troops home."

Iraqis should have been told that "our hearts are with you" and that the United States would do all it could to rebuild their country, he said.

"I think we could have been able to retire with honor," he said. "In fact, I think we can retire with honor anyway."

Cronkite has spoken out against the Iraq war in the past, saying in 2004 that Americans weren't any safer because of the invasion.

Cronkite, who is hard of hearing and walks haltingly, jokingly said that "I'm standing by if they want me" to anchor the "CBS Evening News." CBS is still searching for a permanent successor to Dan Rather, who replaced Cronkite in March 1981.

"Twenty-four hours after I told CBS News that I was stepping down at my 65th birthday I was already regretting it and I've regretted it every day since," he said. "It's too good a job for me to have given it up the way that I did."

War with Iraq AND Iran

I'll answer your question with some background info. Cronkite was the CBS news anchor for MANY years before Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw, or Peter Jennings were even known. He's the one my parents watched for news when they were in their 30's and 40's.

We're still fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq. Now there's talk of 'military options' for Iran. Here's a link from Yahoo. Some of the rhetoric sounds all too familiar.

Walter Cronkite angered alots of Vietnam veterans who were doing the fighting.

Now he is saying the same thing about Iraq and basically telling our U.S. troops it is a failure.

Wrong !!!!

We were winning the war in Vietnam. The Washington boys pulled the plug on the U.S. soldiers.

We are kicking ass in Iraq & Afghanistan and winning the war there. Let's not let the anti-war activists derail the war on terror and let's not see the Washington boys sell out on the U.S. soldiers.

I have not liked Walter Cronkite for many, many years. I think he is a communist sympathizer in his heart mind and soul.

We will win the war on terror for the right reason at the right time in the right place.

God Bless our U.S. troops fighting and I do too want the US troops home and first they have to achieve victory the they can come home with honor and be the victors.

Would you let the terrorists be the victors? No way !!!

Nobody likes war but sometimes a war is necessary and the war on terror is a very necessary one and the anti-activists are attacking President Bush and the U.S. troops viciously and relentlessly.

There is hardly any mention of Sept. 11th victims and the reason why we are there.

I have not forgotten and I rememeber that day very clearly. I was in Washington DC when the whole city was in lockdown mode and so many soldiers came on the streets to protect Washington DC. I remember the missiles on the humvees. I remember everything. I had to wait for a few days to even be able to come home. Security was so tight they would not let me go to the bus or train station or even get a plane ride home. I even thought of walking out of Washington DC then find a place that would call my family and my family would have drove right there to pick me up that same day.

Heath, I think you're way too hard on some subjects you don't know anything about. Were you alive when the Vietnam War was occuring? If so, you were still wearing diapers. My comments are by numbers from above.

1. Walter Cronkite is a damn fine journalist and knows what he's talking about. The best thing you can do, Heath, is turn up your hearing aids and listen.

2. We weren't even close to winning anything in Vietnam, except winning in infecting our men with Agent Orange and other ailments. Have you seen the movie, "Born On The Fourth of July?" I suggest you do, as it is as close to that war you can get.

3. We're fighting for the white assed Queen of England, who owns that oil (check your history books). Get her damned ass over there and do it herself.

4. He is a damned fine journalist and has been for years. He's one of the best! :thumb:

5. Yeah, by getting GWB and his worthless party out of the White House in '08, including Congress.

6. Burn the American flag and pour a quart of oil on the ground when they come by, as THAT is what they're fighting for.

7. It was a tragedy, but it was preventable, but GWB dropped the ball and is fighting a war for the Queen's oil instead.

I'm tired of having the GOP regime and what they stand for, so we will need to vote ALL of them out of office this fall AND in '08.

right on and good answer to all of those 7!

Walter Cronkite is still alive? People still care about his opinion?

Yes, I remember him. I was on active duty (1970-77) in the Navy during the Vietnam "conflict".

Thank you, Boult!! It's good to see someone using their head and not swallowing all that the White House is feeding us.
