Spiny critter hits 15-year-old boy, punctures his leg; man's motive unclear

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - A New Zealand man accused of assault with prickly weapon — a hedgehog — has been fined by a court and ordered to pay most of his fine to his teenage victim.

Whakatane District Court was told Thursday that William Singalargh picked up the hedgehog and threw it several yards to hit a 15-year-old boy in the North Island east coast town of Whakatane on Feb. 9.

Police told the court the creature had hit the victim in the leg, causing a large, red welt and several puncture marks. The teen did not need medical treatment.

Singalargh was convicted of common assault and offensive behavior following a defended hearing. He had pleaded innocent to the charges.

He was fined a total of $545 and ordered to pay $389 to his victim.

The more serious charge of assault with a weapon, namely a hedgehog, was dropped. The maximum penalty for that charge is five years in prison.

It remained unclear whether the hedgehog was dead or alive at the time of the attack, but Senior Sgt. Bruce Jenkins said earlier that it was dead when collected as evidence.

While using a hedgehog as a weapon in an assault is uncommon, Jenkins said people often got charged with assault for throwing things at other people.

This is one odd incident that I've came across with. It's strange when one could use a hedgehog as a weapon but then, I suppose nothing is out of the ordinary now these days.

Yes, some people have hedgehogs as pets. There are around 15 different kinds of hedgehogs in the world. It looks sort of a minature version of porcupine.

I know, It's terrible. At least the teen is lucky enough not to require a medical treatment. It could have been worse, though.
 
So he got in trouble for assaulting the kid ...but nothing was said about him getting in trouble with animal cruelty as well. It is a red flag when a person who uses an animal in this manner...it is an indication that he is seriously troubled -and his behavior will escalate to worse things if intervention doesn't happen NOW.

Agreed.

Animal cruelty is one thing and for one to use an animal as a weapon is going too far. If there's no intervention then all is lost, so to speak.
 
Well, we don't know if it was dead or not before he threw it...

I hope it was already dead... (actually I'd rather it be alive and well, but being dead before throwing is better than after...) of course it would still be a bit sad but at least it isn't cruelty. And yea, it shouldn't have been thrown at all, either way. (not just for the sake of the hedgehog, but also because it isn't good to throw things)

And hedgies are so cute! I held one before... hehehe.
 
Well I sure hope that hedgehog was dead first. I feel terrible for the hedgehog (and of course for the boy that the hedgehog was thrown at). Some sick people out there !!

Oh boy, that's very odd one. Poor Hedgehog and Kid.
 
Use Hedgehog as a weapon... *shake my head disgusitly*

I feel bad for hedgehog and teenager.
