Please explain

2nd cousins
3rd cousins
4th cousins

Oooh, I've always gotten a bit confused on this too. I know 2nd cousins are children of your first cousins... For example, my cousins have had children, so they are my 2nd cousins. Now... I also have children, so what are MY kids to MY 2nd cousins? And forget 3rd & 4th... I'm lost on that one too. Ha ha!

"2nd cousins" means a child of your parent's cousin if your second cousin and you share the same great grandparents. But your second cousin and you do not share the same grandparents. Also, your parent's cousin is your first cousin, once removed.

"3rd cousins" means a child of your parent's second cousin, once removed. Only if your third cousin and you share the same 2nd great grandparents, and do not share the same great-grandparents and grandparents. It could have another same meaning if it is a child of your grandparent's cousin's grandchild.

"4th cousins" means a child of your parent's third cousin, once removed. Only if you share the same 3rd great grandparents.

"5th Cousins and etc." means the same meaning with different generations by different grandparents in a number of genertions.

Why once removed (or depends on a number of generation)?
Those words, "once removed", is used to describe a relationship that two people are from different generations. For an example, your mother's cousin is your first cousin, once removed. This is because your mother's cousin is one generation younger than your grandparents and you are two generations younger than your grandparents. This is one-generation difference equals "once removed."

Another meaning . . . "Twice removed" means there is a two-generations difference. You are two generations younger than a first cousin of your grandparents, so your grandmother's cousin and you are first cousins, twice removed.

Hope that help. :)

PS - You can visit this. (EDIT!: I'll draw a map of family tree with describe the meaning of relationships. So it will take a while to be done.)

you and your cousin are first cousins
your children and your cousin's children are second cousins
your grandchildren and your cousin's grandchildren are third cousins
and so on...

your cousin's child is your first cousin once removed.
your cousin's grandchild is your first cousin twice removed.

Does that help?

What about "Kissing Cousins"??....Oh well....cousins, great aunts once-removed, etc., etc. ....always confused me too! I gave up and say he's my Cuz!....One of my sisters knows the whole family tree from way back when!...And always saying "Do you remmy ur great uncle...etc., etc. ???"...

Makes me feel so dumb, but I'm not gonna tax my intellect trying to unravel it all.

I don't even like them enough to give them a formal title, or bother understanding it.

You could give a try to visit the "Cousin Couples" webpage.

Here's some interesting information:
Cousin Couples - Facts about cousin marriage

EDIT: Oh yes, there is no such "aunt once (or twice) removed", "uncle once removed", or "grandparent once removed", or "granduncle once removed". It cannot have a number of removeds. Only cousins can have a number of removeds by generations only. :)
