KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) -- Two Nepalese climbers were on top of the world this week -- not only because they reached the summit of Mount Everest but because they got married there.

There was no procession, champagne or band -- only piles of snow and a breathtaking panorama for bride Moni Mulepati, 24, and groom Pem Dorjee, 23, as they exchanged their vows at the 8,850-meter (29,035-foot) summit on Monday.

"We were there only for 10 minutes, just enough for us to get married and our friends to take pictures of us," Mulepati told The Associated Press on Friday.

The couple was part of the Rotary Centennial Everest Expedition and scaled the peak with 45 other climbers.

Temperatures at the summit were bitingly cold and the weather treacherous, so they had to make the ceremony quick. They briefly took off oxygen masks and donned plastic garlands while the groom put traditional red powder on the bride's forehead, symbolizing marriage.

The couple had not told friends and relatives of their plans, and were to hold a more formal wedding later in Katmandu.

Family members spoke of their surprise.

"We only knew they were going to climb Everest and nothing about the wedding plans. But it is fine with us," said Mohan Mulepati, the bride's father.

The wedding was unconventional not just for its locale: She is from the Newar community and he is a Sherpa -- an unusual pairing in a country where most marriages are arranged by parents and people tend to stick to their castes.

"With our interracial marriage, we also wanted to give the message that caste and race has no barriers when it comes to marriage," said Dorjee, the groom.

On their return from the mountain, the couple spent their first night at the bride's house in Katmandu.

"We both want to continue climbing mountains," she said.

hmm hmm shud my wedding be at mt everest ? nah it wud be sweet if my wedding will be on summit of el captain in yosemite.

deafclimber, I dunno about a wedding at Yosemite Nat'l park, but I do know a lot of engagement proposals happen there. At least one of my friends has done so.

wow, wedding at 29,000 ft. That's a long way to get to the top to wed for only 10 minutes then go back down. :P

One of my cousins got married in Yosemite. It was like something out of a National Lampoon movie. Right in the middle of the ceremony a huge buck ran right into the meadow and started chasing people away and knocking over all the chairs. They finally shooed the buck away, picked up the chairs, and started the ceremony over again.

this is awesome... my sis wanna to be creamated and have her ashes scattered on mountains.. by the way she was born on mountains in La Paz, Bolivia.. no wonder she is born to rock climb!

Yeah ppl would tie the knot in interesting and even bizarre places.

Richard

Sounds awesome! It'd be kind of neat to tie the knot after summiting a mountain. Of course, both partners in a couple must agree to it.

A lot better marriage idea than all the Star Wars themed weddings I see.

Yikes the couple made it to get married at Mt. Everest. I really love to go to climb and hike up there but too risk for me. Congrats. on the couple. I'm sure they are more happier to get married at Mt. Everest..

Don’t even go there—that shit’s too scary to even think about. But I guess I shouldn’t throw stones. The first place my wife and I went after we got out of the Vegas wedding chapel was the Star Trek Experience at the Hilton. :squint:

I don't care where you go after your wedding just as long as your best man is not Darth Vader. :eek2:

Some people take things far too seriously.

Actually, Lev's best man was Elvis!

Yeah, the only thing more pathetic than a Star Wars wedding would be getting married at a comicon with Darth Vader as the minister, Spidey as the best man, and the Fantastic Four as the bridesmaids. After which you get into the Batmobile, drive around the block, and go BACK to the comicon for your honeymoon. :squint:

Ain't nothing wrong with Elvis.

Eesh. Lev, did you actually see this story somewhere? That just makes my skin crawl, thinking about it.

No, I just made the whole thing up. But I bet it’s happened somewhere, sometime.

Wow, at 29,000 feet; at least, if they divorce, they can blame it on the thin air! LOL!
