I think in the back of everybody's mind we knew this was coming sooner or later. Only this time deaf babies get the treatment first. Who knew?

nope. the first one to get the treatment is one on waiting list for organ transplant.

there's not much of profit for this in deaf field. and it's basically fruitless as well. very sad to see these parents got scammed.

Great news.
When we were looking into options for Lotte (including no CI and the whole family learning signlanguage) we came across this as well. But that's 8 years ago, and it was an option for the future...
Great to see that it has become reality..

Guess blood from the umbilical cord should from now on be saved by default. Could make a huge difference..

Sorry... as far as I know, after CI, this kind of treatment wouldn't work.
This was one of the reasons we considered waiting with CI for Lotte, but this technology was still in research fase... We didn't want to wait... and we're glad we didn't..

You'll have to wait for the "Middle-Inner-Ear transplant"....

Otherwise.... yes... I agree.. "I think stem cell is better alternative to CI" .. but in time.. If it can get the hearing up to "HOH" instead of "No hearing"... there might not be an incentive..

The CI technology is much faster than I expected. There is no Nucleus 5 for people with Nucleus 22 and not know if CI will make one, however they did with Freedom for N22 but... only problem is shorter battery and performance difference. My ENT doctor told me that he recommended to replace the implant with newer, most recent one but I'm not interested for now.

Yup, It isn't problem if you implant your daughter with CI at earlier because she could develop the oral languages, however for me, it is different because I got CI at late childhood and had failed speech therapy for many years. I told my parent about it isn't worth to get CI if I don't fare with speech therapy so they didn't care. After one year of CI, my parent regretted to implant me with larger out of pocket expense because I couldn't hear any exact sound in languages, except for hear yelling all time so tried to get programmed but no success so I decided to gave up.

For stem cell, if they do restore to some hearing aka HoH but can be easily assist with regular hearing aids, I guess so.
 
I would not get stem cell because I do not want to hear anything when I am in sleep. HAHA
 
Yeah, then you wont be able to turn off when you go to bed. Think about it. I have CI for 16 years. I love it and have no problems with it. Now my brand no longer use so I have extra parts just in case that happen in the future. Try to enjoy your life. Put God first and he will take care of all the problems. Scott

I agree. Other than deafness, other conditions that may crop up because of the baby's exposure to viruses while in the womb, born prematurely, or any number of factors when it's recommended to save the cord for possible treatment later. And then, of course, keeping it for yourself for the inevitable down the road but by then perhaps adult stem cells research have grown out into the mature stages that even adults can tap into their own stem cells without the need for cord they never saved.

Wear ear plugs. That'd be the least of our worry. I've taken many naps with my hearing aid on hearing the sound. Especially yesterday at the park with the warm sun out amongst the pine trees with kids laughing and talking nearby at a playground...I dozed off to sleep hearing it. Sounds you hear can be just as soothing to lull you to sleep.
 
ear plugs while sleeping? that's asking for ear infection.

No doubt, I often turn on the stereo to help me fall asleep.
 
Have a hearie friend that cannot go to sleep unless the TV is on...it's my understanding that most hearies can "tune out" noises when they are going to sleep. But some people must have noises at all times....

When my friend came over and told me her TV was broken and she could not sleep....asked me if she could borrow one of my small TV's temporarily?...I loaned her the TV...and later on, was thinking about it...and knowing that I enabled her somewhat....That's one of the reasons I don't allow my boys to have a TV or music on whenever they go to bed....

it's stemmed from childhood. you know.... it's like a safety blanket

Yeah...some childhood habits are hard to break...I've yet to see an adult going around with a blanket and sucking his thumb tho'....:giggle:...And as far as a TV on while I'm trying to sleep...no way. I like it dark, the flickering of the TV would keep me awake.

Yeah, in the middle of the night you get these flashes of light whenever there is a lot of action on tv. Quite annoying. Enough to wake you up and "WFT?"

Anyway, even the soft drone of an airplane buzzing above high while lying on the grass on a nice day is quite soothing to listen to believe it or not. Certain environmental sounds are just plain soothing while others are annoying. Each person is different on what's soothing and what's not.
 
I can't believe what I just read elsewhere. You cannot test a baby's own cord blood stem cells on animals first to see if its safe.

It won't work because the baby's own cord blood stem cells are compatible only to the baby's and not on some animal.

Also, nothing wrong in wanting to hear a more natural sound than using a hearing aid. The closest thing would be the Esteem Envoy implantable hearing device. If people enjoy their hearing technology it's only natural that they seek better sound.
