Wow! This is a start of a new generation of deaf babies to become hearing with the help of their own cord blood stem cells.

Madeline, who wears hearing aids is the first child to participate in a clinical trial using stem cells to treat hearing loss in children launched in Houston. The Conner family has seen her hearing loss go from extreme to moderate since the procedure.

Once proved successful that this treatment can restore sensorineural hearing loss in babies will certainly be much preferable for parents to choose from rather than cochlear implants for their deaf babies. It'd be cheaper, too. This will be a new generation, folks. The time is now.

This is exciting news. I believe this will be very successful

I love News....all News!...and this is NEWS!

And people say this wouldn't happen in another 15 or 20 years down the road on seeing that stem cells will help restore sensorineural hearing loss but this is happening right NOW!

Will this destroy the cochlear implant industry? Only time will tell....

The cord blood stem cells treatment will cure profound deafness for all deaf people. It's going to be commercially approved in several years. This is going to happen way before the totally implantable cochlear implant.

Cord blood stem cells are only good for deaf babies whose own cord, after birth, are stored for later use.

No since the cord blood stem cells are compatible only to the deaf baby where the cord came from.

Then the cochlear implant companies are not going to get destroyed overnight. The scientists got the cord blood stem cells curing deaf babies in Jan. 2012. Mid-2012 the totally implantable cochlear implant is behind schedule

I didn't say it would destroy it overnight. I put in a qualifier saying that only time will tell.

It's not a cure yet. It is seen as restorative medicine right now and the study is still ongoing. It began earlier this year. Hopefully we will get an update this July/August and again in Jan/Feb of 2013. By next year if Madeline's hearing loss goes from extreme/profound to normal hearing and no side effects and is safe, then it's definitely a cure by using the baby's own natural stem cells.

Okay. I'll give you that.

I disagree on one small point. If the cord blood stem cells treament gets the profound deafness down to moderate (instead of normal hearing)... then the Totally Implantable Envoy could cure the moderate deafness, too. This is a better option for profoundly deaf people, since the CI companies never get to it. Maybe in trillions of years for the totally implantable cochlear implant.

oh my.... I truly feel sorry for the parents.... :(

Um, the Envoy implantable hearing device is NOT a cure no matter how you look at it. It cannot stand alone. It is a device. It still requires a battery. But with stem cells ability to help restore hearing to the point of complete restoration and that normal hearing is reached then it can be called a cure where hearing is restored to a normal hearing level.

Same here.

I just want rid of worthless CI from my head and I think stem cell is better alternative to CI.

Wow... That is incredible. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the future.

not even that. I feel sorry for them because of false hope and doctors took advantage of them. $$$$$ gone.
