A New York State trooper was charged yesterday with torching his car Tuesday and then reporting it stolen.

At his arraignment yesterday in First District Court in Hempstead, Derek Johnson, 35, of 90 Debevoise Ave., Roosevelt, pleaded not guilty.

Authorities say Johnson poured gasoline throughout his 2002 Honda Accord and set it on fire behind a building on Front Street in Hempstead. Later that morning, he reported his car stolen to Nassau police.

Johnson was charged with third-degree arson and filing a false written statement.

District Judge Martin Massell set bail at $5,000 cash, but allowed Johnson the choice of being free while under the supervision of the Probation Department.

Johnson's job involves receiving citizen's complaints and dispatching troopers in Poughkeepsie.

Col. Joseph Loszynski, deputy superintendent of the State Police's internal affairs bureau, said Johnson was suspended without pay since his arrest Wednesday.
