Following the massacre in Newtown, Conn. that left 20 children and six adults dead on December 14, community leaders in the nearby town of Southington (about 35 minutes away) are planning to collect and destroy violent video games, as well as CDs and DVDs.

The Hartford Courant reports that volunteers will assemble at the Southington Drive-In on January 12 to accept any video games parents or children wish to get rid of. These games will be destroyed, and each family will receive a gift certificate to a local restaurant, the Lake Compounce amusement park, or a bowling alley.

"We want to stop the violence in our community," Southington board president of the chamber of commerce said Charlie Cocuzza said. "Those games can cost $60 or $70. So we want to give families a certificate to do something fun and family-oriented, something where they can spend a couple of hours together instead."

The initiative is being spearheaded by the Southing SOS community group. The organization made clear it is not linking violent games directly to the killings at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Instead, they suggest that now is a suitable time for parents to engage their children in discussions about whether or not playing violent games is appropriate.

"We're not saying the use of video games causes people to become murderers, but there's evidence that it causes increases in aggressiveness, fear, anxiety and desensitization about actions of violence," said director of community services Susan Saucier.

National Rifle Association vice president Wayne LaPierre said at a press conference last month that violent video games like Bulletstorm and Mortal Kombat were partially to blame for December 14's deadly shooting in Connecticut. California senator Leland Yee called this claim "mind-boggling."

Earlier in December, West Virginia senator Jay Rockefeller introduced a bill to Congress that would direct the National Academy of Sciences to investigate how violent games and other such programming affect children.

Oh wow, I can't believe about how crazy are town leaders and NRA president.

Charlie Cocuzza, Susan Saucier, Wayne LaPierre and some congresspeople are an idiot.

indeed.

less games, more community service. kids these day are too dehumanized and disconnected.

The parents are ultimately responsible for their child, so if the child is allowed to play games whatever they want, so blame on parents.

I think the program to destroy the violent games for gift cards are most ridiculous, I'm wonder if they use tax money (possibly from property tax or sale tax) to buy gift cards. The games don't have much value after year old but only rare, retro games like NES are worth more, but they usually private sell at high price.

I think they should to include the movies because many movies have violence and some of them are not rated.

All games (exception of PC, Mac and Linux) are required to be rated before sold on market due to Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft's policies, or they will not license or approve for game consoles.

I think that war games are very interesting and good, rather than make a bad publicity.

Also, the digital games cannot be resold.

that would be a good start too.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a sudden increase in sales of violent video games, CDs, and DVDs on eBay and CraigsList by those who are collecting the same (for the purpose of making profit on their own... kinda like a police department collecting guns for cash, but instead of melting down some of them... the dirty cops sell the guns elsewhere.

The games are very recycling friendly so no need to burn, just recycle the plastic and the blu-ray discs are recyclable too.

I don't think this is ridiculous. I think this is a great idea. Kids are like sponges, you know. Why not make kids feel like part of groups? I did after school sports every Friday with my peers. It was a lot of fun and I felt like part of a group.

What about adults who own and like violent games?
Will they be allowed to keep their collection even if they have kids?

then they need to grow up and act like an adult

From what I understand, this is like a gun program. No one is required to give up video games or guns. It's only elective. Keep the gun/video game or go and get gift card. That is the choice we have to make as owner of the property.

It's true. Kids are losing social skills and becoming isolated.

I think it is funny that people criticized my hunting as a child. But the thing is, I saw death (deer, bobcats) and the power of guns at a very early age. You learn to respect the gun that way. With video games I think kids are learning a life without consequences. You shoot someone for high score and if you get killed you start the game over. There is no restart button in the woods. Lol.

If kids never play games during childhood so they will play games after become an adult (18th birthday). It did happened to some people, especially gaming is their hobby and there are some people are not hobby to games.

There are some people that have gun as their hobby so they love to collect the guns or go out to shoot so often.

There are multiplayers in gaming and the games can be played more than 1 person in same room.

There are computerized board games for game consoles that where family can play on TV.
