How little Muskan who was born deaf has now benefited from The Cochlear Implants technology. For the Sohar couple Monica and Rajesh, after a lot of heart burn and tears their two children can ultimately be a part of mainstream life.

Their two children — eight-year-old Paawan and six-year-old Muskaan were born deaf. And till date even the best of doctors had given up on the two. But with tears welling up in her eyes, mother Monica says, "Today, our children can hear" and "Cochlear Transplant" has made it possible.

"We were getting ready to go out and I was calling out to my 4 months old daughter Muskaan. I called her a couple of times but there was no response. There was a rush of cold blood in my veins. I was nervous. Is it going to happen all over again with us? This was the nagging thought full of fear that I went to a doctor’s clinic where my daughter Muskaan was declared deaf." Says Monika Sohar, Muskan’s mother.

Earlier than Muskaan, her brother Paawan was also born deaf. With the discovery of Muskan’s problem, Sohars were reliving the same agony and pain and the dark clouds did not seem to giving way to any ray of hope. Paawan’s problem was detected just a little before Muskaan. He was on a hearing aid for some time but that was of no help at all.

"I wanted to leave no stone unturned in search of options that could break the silence in my children’s lives. My search brought me to Batra Hospital in New Delhi where Dr. Kathuria gave me the hope that not all was lost. Medical sciences today have developed bigger wonders and a cure for your kids is one of those. Deaf children around the world are today being treated with Cohlear implants. I have myself treated children by inserting cochlear implant and they can all hear now", said Dr. Kathuria

Muskan’s mother then decided to meet a couple of children who had joined the mainstream life after getting a cochlear implant surgery done. These children could not only hear but also go to normal schools, top in their class and do everything that a normal child was doing. Seeing these children joining back the mainstream, Monika decided to get the cochlear surgery done for both Muskaan and Paawan.

Today, Muskaan loves to go out and play in the evening. She dances to the sound of music. She is doing very well in her school.

A few leading hospitals in New Delhi like Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Batra Hospital and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences carry out the procedure. Post implant training is also available. A cochlear Implant has the following features:

- Body-worn speech processor

- Real time feedback

The LCD display shows whether the processor is functioning and a small indicator light reassures that sound is being received.

- Sound equaliser

The unique performance enhancer, Adaptive Dynamic Range Optimisation (ADRO) works much like a graphic equaliser, boosting soft sounds in quiet and making loud sounds comfortable in noise

- Lockable controls

Easy to set lockable controls prevent infants and young children from adjusting the settings and disrupting their hearing.

- Easy choice

There’s a choice of disposable or rechargeable batteries that can be interchanged without replacing the battery compartment.

CIs and oral education DO NOT and DO NOT confer all the advantages of the mainstream on a kid.....A deaf kid will never ever be totally a part of the mainstream, even if oral education pretends it does! Yeah,it gives us a good skill.....but we will NEVER EVER be a part of the mainstream, the way a hearing person is a part of the mainstream!

I won't wear on Cochlear Implants because I don't believe in Cochlear Implants.

You know....articles like these remind me of the oral demonstrations put on by Bell back in the day.....and I mean, I just can't help being cynical about articles like these...back in the old days they claimed that ALL dhh kids could learn to speak using hearing aids alone! If any lurkers doubt me, just ask some of the older members of our forums! I mean CIs are great for kids with auditory nereopathy....and there's nothing wrong with that....BUT....GRRRR!!!

I now have more time to write, and I just... I don't even know what to say. Where do I start? Do deaf people really have to deal with this total crap all the time? Are people that stupid and illogical? I.....

OMG! What, were they going to euthanize the two perfectly healthy, beautiful, and wonderful children if they didn't get CI's? They gave up on them? It sounds soooo tragic, and so permanent, and so life or death. They are comparing hearing loss to someone with a failing organ. IT IS SICK

Excuse my language, but WTF? What agony or pain or dark clouds? There is no physical pain that goes along with these children's deafness. The only pain they will have is not being able to communicate clearly in a language they fully understand, and the only pains they were feeling as babies were ones they couldn't tell their parents about because they had to wait for their speech skills to come in years later.

Oh really, Dr. Kathuria? So why don't you get an implant. I mean, if their so good, wouldn't u want to be a walking talking example? ... I didn't think so.

"Muscan loves to go out and play in the evening."
What, her inability to hear made her unable to enjoy a cool evening breeze? To gaze up at the stars? To smell a bbq or fireplace going? Did her parents lock her up as a deaf child?
Okay, beyond all that, the reason this is such an awful example: most people like the quiet in the evening.

I am apalled by the unabashed bias of this article. What... what research was done for this? I mean, it sounds like a commercial, one that couldn't even be aired in the US for its bias... I don't think they listed one negative of C.I.'s, like the fact that the sound, even if received well, at the right age, with the right therapy, etc. etc. SOUNDS like the voice of a computer. I have a blind friend, (I am sure the writers of this article would think that he's why I've learned sign) who uses a computer voice to use (I know, I know) the computer, and it is not anything great. It is hard to make out certain syllables, gets very boring at times, and simply doesn't have a very important quality in all languages, tone. Some CI users may be able to use the phone, but I bet there have been plenty of times when there have been misunderstandings with tone, specifically sarcasm. ASL does have tone, at least in the way I'm talking about it, with facial expression, movement of a signs, and other factors.
I can't say that C.I.'s are bad for everyone; I've met people, esp. those late-deafened, who love CI's; but this article, oy. I'm going to bed, it's been a long day
