Cochlear implant surgery is Safe!!

I find that to be amazing. If I understand correctly you are saying you could read lips and understand words that you don't even know. So how could you do that? If someone said for example; How are you doing? If you don't know the words "how are you doing" or their meanings, how could you possibly make use of that information or even know what the words they mouthed were?

Well, if you think about language in terms of symbols, then it is easier to understand. The little girl in Deaf Like Me learned to use the position of the mouth as a symbol that represented the thing being talked about in the same way that a hearing child uses a particular sound to be a symbol that represents the thing being talked about. A sign is another linguistic symbol, a print word is another linguistic symbol. None of these symbols, in and of themselves, have meaning. It is only when we connect them to something that is abstract and being talked about do they become meaningful.

This is the concept that Shel and I have talked about extensively. Once a child develops the understanding of language as symbol, that knowledge can be applied to learning another symbol that represents the same thing. For a deaf child, the easiest way to do this is to learn the symbolic connection through sign. Then that knowledge can be applied to learning English symbols.

As far as "forcing " babies to get CI....think about it this way, Medical studies have already proved that children who undergo general anesthesia are a much higher risk for other health complications later on as they grow. Seriously, putting a baby under general anesthesia is always very risky, they may react to a multitude of things and when babies go "bad" they go down very quickly. Do you as a parent want to risk your child to this or would you be willing to at least wait until they are a little older? Unless it is an emergency, most medical professionals would opt to wait for any baby to be put under general anesthesia. For the best interests of the baby.

Can you please provide a source to back up that claim.

General Anesthesia - Risks and Complications

Source: Anesthesia-Risks and Complications

Although all types of anesthesia involve some risk, major side effects and complications from anesthesia are uncommon. Your specific risks depend on your health, the type of anesthesia used, and your response to anesthesia.

Personal risk factors
Your age may be a risk factor. In general, the risks associated with anesthesia and surgery increase in older people.

Complications from general anesthesia
Serious side effects of general anesthesia are uncommon in people who are otherwise healthy. But because general anesthesia affects the whole body, it is more likely to cause side effects than local or regional anesthesia. Fortunately, most side effects of general anesthesia are minor and can be easily managed.

General anesthesia suppresses the normal throat reflexes that prevent aspiration, such as swallowing, coughing, or gagging. Aspiration occurs when an object or liquid is inhaled into the respiratory tract (the windpipe or the lungs). To help prevent aspiration, an endotracheal (ET) tube may be inserted during general anesthesia. When an ET tube is in place, the lungs are protected so stomach contents cannot enter the lungs. Aspiration during anesthesia and surgery is very uncommon. To reduce this risk, people are usually instructed not to eat or drink anything for a specific number of hours before anesthesia so that the stomach is empty. Anesthesia specialists use many safety measures to minimize the risk of aspiration.
