Tampa, Florida - When John Devine approached the City of Tampa with his request, he didn't think it would be a big deal.

John Devine, Son is Deaf:
"I just want some deaf child signs put up, and I would like it if the people would slow down."

Devine's four-year-old son Timmy is deaf, and he's concerned about the cars that zip by his home at East 10th Avenue and North 47th Street.

John Devine, Son is Deaf:
"I would just hate to see something happen, to my kids or to any kid."

But Devine's request for a warning sign was turned down. Apparently the city follows federal guidelines, which suggests the warning signs are no longer effective.

Devine even offered to pay for the signs himself.

John Devine, Son is Deaf:
"It's a small price I think to pay for safety."

However, after hearing about Devine's situation, Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio decided to change the city's policy. Starting next month, the city will consider granting requests like the one by Devine.

when i was young my parent set up the "deaf child area" sign.. and frankly its not only because of me.. its also because of other kids in the neighboorhood. because people are just annoying.. driving 40 to 45 mph on that pravite 30 mph road. to avoid major street traffic when i move out.. they still have that sign there for years.. oh well.. just to protect other kids :D

nothing new here in Seattle, we already have signs like that near my apt. There are some around the city, too. :)

Theres a Deaf Child sign in my city by the house where my friend grew up. My friends parents had the sign put up when he was little, and its still there and he is almost 30. :D

Thats the problem! people would think these signs are outdated and why bother slowing down? These signs to me are just plain stupidity! Would you call that guy 30 yrs old a deaf child, eh? Just think about it.

The REAL problem is hearing people EXPECTS that EVERY HUMAN BEINGS that is ALIVE on this tweety tiny planet to be able to hear anything! When they find out about deaf person, they freaks out and said it can't be real. Where is the education down the road?

yea i agree that the signs arent effective in subdivisions. only solution is to put the speed humps on streets. my subdivision has those speed humps that REALLY slow mischevious teenagers or rage drivers down for the kids sakes ! they work better than the signs.

My parents did same thing but not cost anything. One thing i really hate about deaf child sign up, alots people stop by our home, and want to meet me and questions me. Becuz i'm from country home and very very small town about 8 miles away. I did begged my parents to take them down, and i dislike strangers stopped by and being nosy. My parents started feel creepy and afraid that will kidnap me, so they did call to take them down. Thank god!
