Tampa, Florida - When John Devine approached the City of Tampa with his request, he didn't think it would be a big deal.
John Devine, Son is Deaf:
"I just want some deaf child signs put up, and I would like it if the people would slow down."
Devine's four-year-old son Timmy is deaf, and he's concerned about the cars that zip by his home at East 10th Avenue and North 47th Street.
John Devine, Son is Deaf:
"I would just hate to see something happen, to my kids or to any kid."
But Devine's request for a warning sign was turned down. Apparently the city follows federal guidelines, which suggests the warning signs are no longer effective.
Devine even offered to pay for the signs himself.
John Devine, Son is Deaf:
"It's a small price I think to pay for safety."
However, after hearing about Devine's situation, Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio decided to change the city's policy. Starting next month, the city will consider granting requests like the one by Devine.
