Yes, I do some work pro bono. However, interpreting is also my job. Many of the terps I know do volunteer their services in certain circumstances. But face it, they are trained professionals and deserve to be paid for their time and expertise.
Depends on the situation
CC is often "funded" by various advertisers (or the broadcasting station)
Interpreters are often paid by: doctors offices (NOT the patient/client!!), conference host/sponsor , the educational institution (or school district/division) etc ... it really depends on what the situation is.
In the case of doctors, emergency/hospital, accredited educational setting etc the Hoh/Deaf/SI user should NEVER have to pay.
Did you have specific situations in mind ?
Yes, there are deaf patients who can't communicate by writing and reading. Note writing with a doctor is impossible for them. Thanks Anij.
I can't imagine ASLers person who may not have the english skills, it could be misunderstood. Like you said it could be dangerous. Best way to get interpreters which it would be helpful.
You can print this out for your doctor:I was just curious that's all. But for some doctor wouldn't provide interpreters because of the money. So, I'm using notepad on my blackberry instead. Same with my other friend wouldn't get terp from her doctor, only notepad....
