Caught On Camera: Teen Dies After Shot With Taser Gun

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A teenager died after being hit with a police Taser gun for 37 seconds, and the whole thing was caught on tape by surveillance cameras.

Authorities said that Darryl Turner had been in a confrontation with a supervisor at work at a North Carolina grocery store.

When Officer Jerry Dawson arrived, he fired his Taser gun at the 17-year-old and struck him in the sternum.

"The initial use of the (Taser gun) is not in question," said Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Chief Ken Miller.

However, for 37 seconds, Dawson continued to use the Taser gun against the teen.

An autopsy revealed that Darryl Turner died of a heart attack, authorities said.

NBC Charlotte affiliate WCNC reported that Dawson was given a five-day suspension for firing the Taser gun too long.

"I wouldn't want to be (hit with a Taser gun) for 37 seconds, I can assure you of that," said Joe Kuhns, a professor of criminal justice at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. "It's a lengthy period of time."

Kuhns said he does support the use of the guns, however. "For the most part, their use has been effective. It has reduced officer injuries. It has reduced suspect injuries."

But a recently released National Institute of Justice study indicated that since 1987, there have been 300 deaths from the devices, also called conducted energy devices.

"There may be circumstances in which repeated or continuous exposure is required, but law enforcement should be aware that the associated risks are unknown," the study said. "Therefore, caution is urged in using multiple activations of (Taser guns) as a means to accomplish subdual."

Turner's family said they believe he didn't have to die.

"The officer was not confronted with circumstances that required the use of that type of force," said family attorney Ken Harris.

Dawson won't face criminal charges in the case, but Turner's family is considering a lawsuit, WCNC reported.

See video... *sigh*....

You really want ban taser and use real gun and shot their leg or arm to wound?

I think in most jurisdictions the officer is allowed to tase for 10 seconds followed by at least another 10 seconds of nothing and are allowed to tase 3 times. Im not 100% sure on this but I do recall one of my LEO friends telling me something like this a while back. If I see him in the next day or two I'll ask and get a confirmation on what the general rule of thumb is for using the taser.

I'm pretty sure you are not allowed to use them on suspects younger than 18 for this very reason.

I was thinking the same thing.

Go for 10 seconds... if he resists again... 10 more seconds... etc.

NOT... 37 seconds straight!

What the hell is going on with these officers?

In effect, what is happening is that this victim was electrocuted without using an electric chair. Hell, the most he could have been charged with, according to the report posted, would be creating a public distrubance. Court appearance and small fine would have been the way it would have played out. Instead, he was sentenced to the death penalty by yet another seriously distrubed police officer.

The cop received a 5 day suspension for killing a 17 year old kid who was arguing with his boss? Talk about inequities!!!!

I didn't understand why the police use a taser shock to teenagers??

I agree. A 5 days suspension is not even enough in this case because it isn't going to bring the teenager's life back for his wrongdoings.

37 seconds straight being tasered is far beyond being necessary. If the officer felt that he was at threat, he could simply have tasered the teen at least for 10-15 seconds because that is enough to send electricity through the body OR to use another tactic to solve the dispute. Being electrocuted for 37 seconds straight is too much on the body.

I say that we corner that cop into a room and deliver him a little taste of his own medicine.

Wow that happens in my own city where I live.

Talk about insanity...37 seconds is obviously too long for a 50,000 volt teaser gun.

Definetly VERY deadly.
