Career dreams shattered by disability?

I wanted to be a social worker for deaf and hoh people years ago and I told
social workers could not be deaf or hoh .Person would not help me !

That's not true. My caseworker is deaf and shes a social worker. I swear people are just threatened by the fact that we may end up being better than them.

Hrmm....I'm not really sure what I want after college and on to a career. I'm thinking about getting involved with business world, such as consulting and entrepreneurship, but also getting involved with environmental issues.

Yes, I may be deaf and with CI, and have to deal with the hearing people daily, but I guess I have been lucky most of the time that nearly all of my employers are understanding and willing to hire me despite my deafness. I haven't gone into business or anything with it yet, but I expect the business and consulting industry to be tougher on people with disabilities, but I have faith that we can make it through. :) (Anybody with experience in consulting and entrepreneurship on this board?)

ive always wanted to be a porn movie director but not hearing when an orgasm gonna burst hurts me chance

While growing up, I have wanted to become Astronaut, to work for the NASA... and the thing is that my parents have encourged me.... it wasnt until I entered High School that I realized I cant be Astronaut because I'm deaf and I felt like I was slapped in the face. I asked my parents why they have encourged me doing so when they knew I can't become Astronaut, their reply was they were hoping I'd change the Career dream on my own and that they loved how I was so into learning things, that they didn't want to put a stop into it by telling me the truth. I have also thought about working for the Air Force in High school and when I told my Dad, He told me honestly that I can't join because Im deaf. So I kept on searching what I'd like to become: Graphic Designer or Nurse.

Now I know what Im going to become, dentist cleaner....

well you see - if you aim high for NASA astronaut... and you didn't get it - that's ok. You will get the 2nd best in the list... say.... NASA engineer. Both are still a great accomplishment.

i got a ALOT of respect for rocket scientist, engineers , one only has to watch the entire length of Tom hanks' 'From the Earth to the Moon" freaken amazing mini-series- length movie.documentary. Since then my heros in space travel (thus far) are the engineers and air force pilots , brave fellas !!

New here... hope I can jump in with my two cents...

I am hearing, and it pisses me off when anyone is treated with less respect because they are Deaf, or because they are not a carbon copy of what some moron thinks everyone should be....

My son has a physical disability, and I know we have had to (and continue) to fight to have him be treated like every other kid. It makes me mad knowing that it's something he'll struggle against, to some degree, for the rest of his life... some idiot is going to decide that since he can't walk, he can't do fill in the blank. :pissed:

As a hearing person, I am embarrassed by the negative role that hearing people have played in the experiences of so many people in the Deaf community... Anyone who is capable of doing a job should have the same opportunity to be hired, and it's still not happening.
