My car is 1996 Ford Escort, 1.9 SEFI, dropped valve seat in May. Engine is rebuilt with a new head, 2 new pistons, all new rings. Starts and runs.

BUT oil is leaking somewhere right behind exhaust manifold. I can't find the leak. It is smoking and smells of burning oil. I checked PCV valve area and head gasket but can't find it!

Any ideas? The smoke is so thin I can't get video. But it is right in front of #4 cyl. No crack in block. Seems like oil is hitting the cat. So confused!

replace and re-seal the valve cover gasket. Take a picture and post it up so we can see. ( doesn't have to be of the smoke, just the general location ) it would help.

Leak from top of the exhaust manifold? Under the exhaust manifold? Does the oil burn occur on accelerate?

It looks like it's from the lower right top side. Burns as soon as the engine is warm.

I think it is camshaft seal cuz the oil seep down to the line of the cylinder head gasket and dip onto the exhaust manifold or pipe. Make sure PCV valve grommet is free of cracks or harden rubber, also oil filler cap for sign of rubber gasket or sometime mechanic put cheap valve cover gasket or neglect valve cover gasket installation...
