Campus officer kills naked freshman at South Alabama
Campus officer kills naked freshman at South Alabama - CNN.com

Authorities in Mobile, Alabama, are investigating why a University of South Alabama police officer shot and killed an 18-year-old freshman who they say was naked and acting erratically outside the campus police station early Saturday.

The campus officer heard a loud banging noise on a window at the station at 1:23 a.m. CT (2:23 a.m. ET) Saturday, the university said in a statement. When he left the station to investigate, the school said, "he was confronted by a muscular, nude man who was acting erratically."

The man, later identified as Gilbert Thomas Collar, of Wetumpka, Alabama, repeatedly rushed and verbally challenged the officer in a fighting stance, the school said.

The officer, whose name hasn't been released, drew his weapon and ordered Collar to stop, the school said. The officer retreated several times to try to calm the situation.

"When the individual continued to rush toward the officer in a threatening manner and ignored the officer's repeated commands to stop, the officer fired one shot with his police sidearm, which struck the chest of the assailant," the school statement said. "The individual fell to the ground, but he got up once more and continued to challenge the officer further before collapsing and expiring."

Campus police immediately contacted the district attorney's office to request an external investigation, and the Mobile County Sheriff's Department will assist, the school said.

The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of internal and external investigations, the school said.

School spokesman Keith Ayers called it a "campus tragedy" for the university family but offered no other details, citing the active investigation.

The University of South Alabama, located in Mobile, enrolls about 15,000 students.

Wetumpka, located just north of Montgomery in the middle of the state, has nearly 8,000 residents.

That stupid!

Un-justificable shooting That officer needs to be punished. Shooting is valid only when one threats to kill and shows weapon of any kind. Naked guy and no weapon showing is not justify for shooting him.

Wait for all the facts to come out. You don't know yet if this was justified and it IS POSSIBLE for a naked man with no weapon to kill someone. Don't turn this into another GZ situation.

Yup, I agree with you and that's just too far.

Also, what is wrong with taser gun or pepper spray? They should take naked guy down so easily.

That's no GZ situation because it is "the officer" that who shot the naked guy but GZ is civilian (not officer/cop) that shot the unarmed teen who attacked him.

That's big different situation.

it reminds me of one deaf guy who has not take the medicine for a several days and didn't take care of himself. He ended up running back and forth all over the court during the basketball game was on. Some of us who know him and was like, " no way he would not do that" some of us did not know that he was on medicine for something. i m not sure. Security from school chased him for like a half hr. At last, He was brought up to the hospital. He turns out he's ok. I dont remember what kind of it is but hes ok.

You are only partly correct. Go back and re-read my post. My point is that posters are making decisions (right/wrong) before knowing all the facts. That is what took place in the GZ thread. Beside this is a campus security officer. You should know this because even UAB has them. So, in effect, he is the same as any citizen (not officer/cop).

oh my.... looks like another case of Florida cannibal attack :Ohno:

that's fine. you don't need to come in here and act like a cop, telling us what to do. let them express whatever the opinions they have. you've said your piece in here and no need to repeat it twice or thrice.... or quadrice....

No, that's incorrect, the college security officer is law enforcement that are commissioned by city/county (for UAB Police - commissioned by Birmingham Police Department, Gallaudet University DPS - commissioned by Metropolitan Police Department) and they have same rights as officer/cop that only patrol the college campus. They have authority to make arrest, detain, issue a ticket, fine, use of weapons to take combative down, fill the accident report and same services that city police have.

The campus security officers are not mall cop and they are real law enforcement officer, not rent a cop, that's big difference.

That what I learned from DPS at Gallaudet University and they are real police officer that only patrol the college campus.

GZ doesn't have any authority and he's just regular civilian that have grant to use SYG law to defend himself, but his claim is middle of dispute in the court. He couldn't issue a fine and ticket, can't stop the strangers for questioning (except in his property), can't issue an arrest or detain and doesn't have same rights as the officer.

News sources don't report all the facts because it might jeopardize an on going investigation. It's unlikely law enforcement provided them with much details while they're trying to determine the facts in the case. I think people in the public need to give people in law enforcement space to do their job. If there's wrong doing on the part of the cop, it'll be only a matter of time before that's determined.

Well...if some naked, crazy-acting guy came running at me, I sure as hell would not welcome him with "open arms"....:giggle:...:hmm:

No, the article that was posted said campus police officer. Many college campuses have their own police departments that have fully commissioned law enforcement officers in a regular police department that only operates on the college or it's property. I am just wondering if he did not have a Taser? If the man was larger than him and he had no Taser then if in fear for his life from a crazed or drugged subject he is authorized to use deadly force. Wait for the facts. It could go either way at this point.

......If a naked man came to a window or glass door in my house like that....Darn tootin' I'd get my gun if it was readily available, even go run to get it..... to protect my family and myself.

Just don't feel the Officer is at fault, he retreated several times, trying to calm the situation...still the man persisted.....who knows? The naked guy could have been on "bath salts" and would have tried to bite and eat the officer, even kill the officer.

From the way it sounds I would say there is a very good chance the naked man was on bath salts. I would just like to know if the officer had a Taser.
