Back Yard Burger closes most Arkansas locations without notice
Back Yard Burger closes most Arkansas locations without notice - KATV - Breaking News, Weather and Razorback Sports

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - Most of the Back Yard Burger fast food restaurants in Arkansas shut down this week with no warning.

Corporate spokesperson Monte Jump confirmed eight company-owned restaurants closed Sunday night because of slow business. Four franchised restaurants are still operating.

Stevie Powell, the Bryant franchise owner, said the corporate Back Yard Burgers closed with no notice to employees or customers and that's leading to confusion about if her restaurant is still open.

Jump, however, defends the decision describing the procedure as typical in the restaurant business. Corporate Back Yard Burger had recently reviewed the economic situation of the company and found the Arkansas stores not to be profitable.

Jump also said while letting employees go at the last minute is never a good thing, the company would rather not risk customers getting bad food or bad service from disgruntled employees. The Back Yard Burger spokesperson also pointed out the company had to be sure employees would continue to show up for work.

Back Yard Burger did not know how many jobs were lost, but promised employees would still be paid for time worked.

Back Yard Burger also released a statement about the closures.

"We regret having to close our Company-owned restaurants in Arkansas. Like any responsible company during these challenging times, Back Yard Burgers is conducting a comprehensive review of its business to ensure the Company is operating efficiently and positioned for future growth. We remain committed to continuing to provide high-quality, freshly prepared, great tasting food to our customers in the other markets we serve and are pleased to report that Back Yard Burgers franchise-owned locations remain in Arkansas."

The four franchises that are still open are:
•Reynolds Road in Bryant
•Military Road in Benton
•Pleasant Crossing Boulevard in Rogers
•Central Avenue in Hot Springs
