Bringing Home a Puppy Tonight!

After waiting since April 10, we are finally bringing home our puppy! But we had a huge setback. Our original puppy, Sam, died last week. It was devastating for my girls. But the breeder had another puppy (Sam's brother) for us. We decided to take Sam's brother.

I have never had a puppy before. I grew up with dogs but I never paid attention to how my parents raised/trained puppies.

I am wondering if any of you have valuable tips for me? I have so many questions like crate training, what to feed him, how to train him, can he become a Service Dog for the Deaf if I take some training and get him licensed, etc etc. Will it be okay to leave him at home while I work or should I place him in doggie daycare?

It is almost like bringing home a brand new baby and Im being a first time mother!

By the way, the puppy is half Bichon/Lhasa Apso.

Puppies like wet and dry food, as long it is good quality dog food. There are plenty of books that teach you how to train dogs in many ways. I think you can train your dog to get licensed to become a service dog for the deaf, not sure how it works, though. It depends on the dog, some dogs can stand being home not destroying things while you're gone to work, some need more attention than others, some don't.

That breed of dog is something that I never heard of, something new to me.

Good luck with a bit of advice I gave you, I'm sure others will follow up, also.

Meggie, by the way very cute puppy, Isn't that the puppy which grows up and have so much hair in front of his eyes?

You could go to any pets store or PetMart for a booklet about Lhasa Apsos pets. Which tells you how to feed your puppy and keep your puppy healthy everything you need to know about your dog.

I don't think having the puppy staying home alone would be trained to be house broken. It's good idea to teach the dog potty train outside earliest as possible. Do you have someone in mind to watch your puppy for you while you work like a family member, relative or a friend? ;)

I like that name Brownie since that puppy looks brown and black. Taylor or Cooper a good name too.

Aw how cuteee!!

When I first brought a kitten, I brought a book on how to raise one, and information about kittens, what foods they should eat, what type of toys they're allowed to have etc.......It is very helpful too and also you can ask any questions when you go into a pet store, what kind of foods or etc or you can call your vet on that information also or when you take your puppy to his first visit to the vet...

Good luck on your new puppy, hes such a cutie....

Hey, I just wanted to stop by and say congrats on your new "baby"! Enjoy!

aww that so cute, being dog/cat lover-knowing how to treat dog right and maintaince the health which you should have no problem but for training suggest look for books on dog training or dog breeding whichever you are interesting into.

Suitable perfect name "Sheba" Looks adorable litter!

Newspaper is best the start for training potty.. shown your puppy where bathroom placed.. when trainned well and show your puppy outside bathroom.. keep going until sucessed.. give your puppy good treat.. *applause* Good Dog or your puppy name wha..ever you like.. :D

You're all the best luck newest puppy in your house!

*psssst* Advise keep eye your puppy in case may happends house broken.. give your puppy lotsa toys and also your puppy will not think about housebroken.

Awww cute.. I cant wait to get our budget straight out so we could get a dog...

I would name your puppy.. Muffy.. cuz he looks like muffin or puffin.. hehe :D

Good luck with names..

i gotta go with alex deffy ewok OR gizmo from the gremilins movie thats SO cuteeeeeeeee

mine's name lilo after the lilo and stitch movie shes a little hell raiser and acts all innocent after getting into trouble LOL

So the best thing is find out what he likes to do constantly on his first couple of days then u ll know what to name him but the two i said gizmo and ewok are one of the best i can think of !

Awww what a cute puppy!
Mine is similar as yours, we call her Emma, aka RAT. :giggle:

Toby
Kimba
Timba
Tippy
Nugget
Chuck

At first, My friend named her puppy Jennifer, the Vet told her its too long sybullas, and it can confused dogs, its best short and simple word for dogs, she changed it to Goldy.

I vote for "Ewok"!

In the tribute to the completed series of Star Wars since you did mention your daughters want to watch the Esp 3??? ;-)

How about Maggie, Barney or Shady ?

Alex's suggestion the name sounds perfect after the Star War. :D
