Contraband candy has led to big trouble for an eighth-grade honours student in Connecticut.

Michael Sheridan was stripped of his title as class vice-president, barred from attending an honours student dinner and suspended for a day after buying a bag of Skittles from a classmate.

School spokeswoman Catherine Sullivan-DeCarlo says the New Haven school system banned candy sales in 2003 as part of a districtwide school wellness policy.

Superintendent Reginald Mayo said the principal was just trying to keep students safe, but he'd review the decision to suspend Michael. The boy says he didn't realize his candy purchase was against the rules, but he did notice that the student selling the Skittles on Feb. 26 was being secretive.

Oh boy here we go again

Gee, I wonder what's coming up next?

Sure, It's understandable that the candies and junk food is not healthy but I think to a point where it comes to a suspension and to be stripped off as a vice president for the boy's class is a little bit too far.

That's taking it a little to far to suspend him at least, they would have warned him selling candy was prohibited.

Couldn't agree with you more. What ever happened to detention? This is what happens when rules (or laws) are applied across the board without common sense regarding intent or level of infraction. And what happened to the kid who was selling the candy?

I find it odd that people become outraged by this, but seem to find it okay to fine a woman $1000 for dying her dog ina case of a law that has a different intent, or that it is okay to demand that all parents submit to mandatory DNA testing. The world has gone mad.

Yeah... this is crazy!

This is all cuz of the stupid "Zero Tolerance" policy that a bunch of schools have been developing.

I remember reading about a couple of 5-year-olds being suspended simply cuz they were playing "cops-&-robbers" using their fingers for "guns".
