BELEN, N.M. — New Mexico police have charged a 10-year-old-boy with first-degree murder in the shooting death of his father.

Police say the boy called Belen police, who arrived at the family's home Thursday to find 42-year-old Byron Hilburn shot once in the head.

Police say the boy used his own rifle to shoot his father.

Police say the boy told them he thought his father was disciplining him too harshly and too often.

They believe the boy's 6-year-old sister witnessed the shooting. Authorities say she's with family members.

Hilburn was pronounced dead at an Albuquerque hospital.

The boy was taken into the custody of the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department at an undisclosed location.

even if the gun did belong to the 10 year old boy, it should have been locked up :ugh:

Seems nothing was disclosed about that, but I think abuse being a reason is very possible. Tragic, nonetheless.

I must say I agree with both C.C Sinned and Alleycat. Even if that gun was locked up, I'd not want any children of mine to have the key to it.

As Alleycat says, we don't know enough because there's little information about this and abuse can't be discounted here.

There are plenty of 10 years old who were abused... but none of them killed their father for being overly strict or anything... and then you have a 10 years old who really have an anger problem that the slightest restriction from video games will tick them off. But only the court will know the real story.

Well, there is a verse in the bible about being overly harsh:

Col 3:21 Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.

I agree. I remember this verse. :)
