Actually, it's a kind of technology that increases usability for the device. It is something that usually benefits people using the voice and sound features for cell phone and certain wireless devices.

"Bluetooth" is a protocol that uses wireless to communicate a certain way with other devices that use Bluetooth. Bluetooth can be used to control other devices that use bluetooth or exchange information between devices that use bluetooth.

The most common kind of wireless technology out there that people see and use is the kind in computers that uses IEEE 802.11 tech. When you see "802.11a/b/g/etc.", that is the kind that uses high speed wifi to access the internet.

Bluetooth is VERY short range wireless tech and usually involves some features like:

A cell phone with bluetooth and one of the following things: a stereo with bluetooth OR an MP3 player with bluetooth OR a car stereo with bluetooth: Use the cell phone to change the song list. No need to change dials on the music device, just use the cell phone.

A palm pilot with bluetooth and cell phone with bluetooth: Wirelessly exchange contact info between the palm pilot and cell phone, without using the infared port (which requires line of sight). This is good for when you're a business person and people you meet have bluetooth cell phones -- exchange your information instead of giving them your business card.

There are a ton of more ideas on how to use this, but keep in mind, Bluetooth is NOT very fast and does not have a long range.

*shrug* There ARE many features out there for Bluetooth -- it's just that in order to take advantage of the features of Bluetooth, you need to have OTHER devices that use Bluetooth. Otherwise, what's the point? You can't use wireless on yourself. :)

There are tons of great ideas out there on how bluetooth is being used. One day, you may be able to change the channels on your TV by using your bluetooth-enabled phone. You can buy a GPS device that uses bluetooth to talk to your phone and tell you exactly where you are on Earth:

That's the kind of stuff you can do with Bluetooth.

If you have some time, and you really want to know if Bluetooth is the thing for you, go to: http://www.bluetooth.com/
