Hey Blackberry User!!

(same goes for those who own Portable Media Player (like iPod, Sandisk Sansa View, Zune, and any MP3 player with video player ready)

I got the "shrunked" DVD movies working in BB Curve! I use DVD Catalyst 3 and any DVD movies with subtitles in.

First of all... Be sure you have 1GB MicroSD or bigger installed in your Blackberry and enuf space in your MicroSD. USUALLY movie files can be anywhere from 350mb to 800mb depending on how long the movie last. (except if you are planning to watch series of movie., You'll need 8GB MicroSD [for newer Curve and 8800] and have spare time all day and maybe night to convert series of movies unless you have Dual or Quad core PC or lappy that will make conversion really really quick)

Download and install DVD Catalyst 3 software (free to try and it's a full version to experiment). Here's link: DVD Catalyst Products (it cost $19.95 if you want to buy it if you're sastify of it's quality)

Run the DVD Catalyst 3 and pop in your favorite DVD movies,

Let it scan and detect tracks.

Then go to "Video Player device:" and pick "Blackberry then sub window, 83xx Curve or 88xx Series". (or you can just simply pick any if you have other than just BB).

Click Modify. Be sure the "Player Screensize:" set to 320x240, Video Quality (kbps): 500, Video mode: 1 Pass, Sound quality (who cares!!, We're deaf!!).

Conversion Format: Set it to "mpeg4_ipod"

Volume: I set it to 64 kpbs and Mono (who cares! I'm deaf)

*Important* Framerate: Set it to 24 fps, Do not try 30fps (don't lust over it unless you want to waste your day to experiment) cuz it'll become choppy and sllloooowww even BB Curve can take 30fps and 800kpbs, I've already tried that and media player crashed with error after few seconds... Just follow my advice!!! Stick with 24fps with 500 kpbs!!!!!. Video will be silky smooth!!! (I got my co workers drooling over it *xcuse me you're drool'n on my berry!!*)

Save Profile for your BB that you set.

Don't worry about "Edit Video Settings:" cuz it's set for Blackberry.

Go to "Global Settings:" Don't touch!! the top window, On middle Window, Be sure "default audio selection: and Default subtitle selection: Both CHECKMARKED!

On inside box in Middle box, Checkmark "Always use subtitles when available" and Checkmark the radio button on the outside of inner box "Nicer Subtitle"

ON bottom Window, Be sure the INNER box set to "Remove black bars from device".

Leave the rest of settings ALONE. Click "Apply" on the Middle Window.

When you see below of the window, be sure "Enable selection for conversion" checkmarked and "Subtitles" set to English CHECKMARKED.

You can click "Review" below it and see how it looked. Be sure the Review video window looked almost square just like Blackberry while it's running. Look at the top bar of the "Review" window says "Device playback resolution: 320x240". Then click the button below the Review window "Apply to all equal selections" and click the Review bar's "X" button to close it.

Double check to be sure Subtitle been CHECKMARKED.

Then click "Go" to convert movie. It'll take time depending how fast is your computer. Usually regular computer will convert at the same rate as movie's time (like if movie is 2hr 15 min, computer will do same) but if you have faster processor, faster it'll convert. This software are configured to convert video at very very fast rate if you have Dual core or Quad core processor with Hypertreading.

Once you are done converting movie, go to My Document--My video and you should see movie file ending with "xxx.mp4" .

Plug in your Blackberry into computer via USB cable.

Once the pop up window and click "view file" or go to My Computer and click "Blackberry" drive.

Navigate to "movie" by "Blackberry--Movies", Open the folder.

Then COPY .mp4 movie file and past it to Blackberry's "Movie" folder. It'll take about few min to be transferred if you are using USB 2.0. Using old USB 1.1 will take more than 10 to 15 min to transfer.

Once it's done, Left click "remove hardware" next to clock and select drive (x) where Blackberry's drive letter located and click to remove.

Unplug your Blackberry then go to Media player and see how movie looks. At first it'll show small screen but in few seconds, it'll go full screen (if you already checkmark "fullscreen" on Blackberry media player.

You MAY experience minor glitch when you stop in the middle of movie then play again, It'll run a wee bit choppy. Stop again and wait a min then try again. it should go back to smooth video again. My Curve did it sometime. I don't know why but don't ask!!

Some movies cannot convert like you wish for. Be expect it to happen... I tried to convert one of Japanese movie with subtitle on and it came out rectangular (Wide screen) with NO subtitle on BB!! I tried to mess with Catalyst converter settings and still get same result!! I couldn't figure out why!!

Enjoy watch movie anywhere you go.

PS: I tried to transfer converted .mp4 movie to my daughter's Sandisk Sansa view 8gb and it worked just like BB's cuz the Video resolution is exactly the same..

3GP SET IS BEST for all blackberry series!

DUDE, this is good tip for blackberry users. I respect your recommend of Format Set: MPEG4 for BB.. However I refuse to setting MPEG4 for my bb curve. I noticed it always lag or skip. Most BB users setting 3PG formats for any blackberry series. 3GP setting is BEST FORMAT for ALL BLACKBERRY SERIES! ;)

I strongly suggest sites for blackberry users, Because I did test all softwares for curve:

This convert dvd movie to video formats such as 3GP, MPEG4, on and on for PSP, Mobile Phone or other Portable:
Extra DVD Ripper Express **GOOD DVD RIPPER PROGRAM FOR ALL BLACKBERRY SERIES**

my sample of this:

KEEP IN MIND: Always setting 3GP formats instead of MPEG4 set for any mobile phones such as BB, HTC on & on..

ENJOY & GOOD LUCK

Great advice, XBGMER, thanks.

How much of MB that used for 2 hours of film on 3GP format? I hopefully not over 1 GB.

If you convert any DVD movie to video formats (3GP set), it will format 300MB about, thats it.

Not bad, 3GP seems great compression for mobile phone.

I need looking for 8 GB microSD since I only have 4 GB microSD.

Here are the capacities supported by the various OSs.

* BlackBerry Device Software 4.2.0 Up to 2GB microSD
* BlackBerry Device Software 4.2.1 Up to 4GB microSDHC
* BlackBerry Device Software 4.2.2 Up to 4GB microSDHC
* BlackBerry Device Software 4.3.0 Up to 8GB microSDHC
* BlackBerry Device Software 4.5.0 Up to 8GB microSDHC
* BlackBerry Device Software 4.6.0 Up to 32GB microSDHC

Anyway you can hunt lowest price of SDHC from meritline-online when they are on big sale like labor day or something. So you can check my post on blog as get an idea what I got.

Plus, I heard the rumors are true that SDHC 32GB will capable with 4.5 os, isn't that good news???? I will get SDHC 16 or 32 GB if Necessary..

Did you read my description
"use 24 Fps..". Fps is Frame per second..

Slower fps, better it get. But don't go under 24 fps or else it'll be choppy again. It's a "sweet spot" for BB slicky smooth video. Got my co worker drooling all over it.

Although BB curve and 88xx can do 30 fps. It may require tweaking to get settings right.

. Dvd catalyst 3 did have .3gp format. I tried that and it was choppy. So I didn't adjust the Fps originally. I didn't bother using it cuz I tried couple of time and it wasted my day cuz of time of transferring dvd format to smaller format and my BB video was so choppy.

.Mp4 works very well with any MP3 players with video. My daughter's Sandisk Sansa View 8mb using exact same screen format like my bb and it ran exactly like it ran on my BB media player.

The reason why I use .mp4 file format cuz it works really well and movie is silky sexy smooth make other PDA user green with envy.

So I would use .3gp on other softwares. Thanks for listing more softwares so I can try out with .3gp format AND adust fps too. I do know BB would work with three file formats. It won't run .avi at all.

One software which is Amerisoft for Blackberry is pure sucky cuz it doesn't have .3gp and .mp4 file format. It user setup is too restrictive.

So if you experiment, Use .mp4 file format for iPod which is 100% compatible to BB. And don't forget try change fps from 30 to 24.

Trust me
Don't use .mpeg4

I am thinking that one other reason why my BB curve's video were choppy at 30 fps on .3gp file format due to 1gb ordinary MicroSD included with Curve when I got it. I am aware that MicroSD are slow.

Is SDHC MicroSD a high speed memory? I planned to get 8gb SDHC microSD. So I can throw in more movies to watch during work downtime.

I personally really really WANT to copy TV shows from DVR. I do have ATI Rage pro with TV tuner built in AGP card and planned to use it to plug it in to DVR to 'dub' a copy of tv show. DVR just had firmware update last spring included CC!! So that save all that hassle to have CC box in between!! ATI tv tuner too have CC decoder too but I recorded the show for experiement and CC don't show unless I turn it on. BB do not have CC decoder of course!! So DVR w/ CC on dub to TV tuner card to record will make CC appear on recorded show. It is actually a .avi format so I can Reconvert it to .mp3 or .3gp for BB.

I have seen $100 box that is straightfoward copy movie or shows on .mp4 format automatically to MicroSD plugged in from any video source such as DVD, VCR, DVR, Video camera ect.. It is made for BB or any MP3 players with video. But the real problem is that box only have Audio/Video input and memory card plugged in. It's real hassle for Curve to remove battery in order to access to MicroSD. I can just have one MicroSd only for dubbing and transferring to PC or printer that have memory card slots using MicroSD to SD card adapter or use MicroSD to USB adapter for quicker movie file transfer to BB plugged to PC USB.

Ill try find one and post it.

I forgot to add that my BB Curve just had it's BBOS upgraded to 4.5.0.77 . So I shouldn't have any problems with video file format tho.

Can this program play WMV directly from Email attachment?

I tried that in past and got error message. BB supposed to have .wmv support but I only got error message no matter what. It was before I upgraded BBOS 4.5 . I even tried send video attachment on BB email to my wife's BB 8830 and it won't play on hers cuz her BB have BBOS 4.2 and it won't support my Curve's .3gp video format .

But I just upgraded both of our BB to 4.5 and haven't tried again. I hope it'll work this time..

Maybe I can check again and see if .wmv would work with newer OS 4.5 .

Catty, Yeah I read it. I did modified settings as following your instructions as exactly I done.

img7495a600x400pp7.jpg

Let me show you something: I see samething that BB has issues with MP4 formats like mpeg4.. no matter what I modify settings. So You notice it something miss on BB from PSP.

MP4 formats running PSP & BB Curve:
[yt]hkRPA9LmMlg[/yt]

3GP formats running BB Curve
[yt]2U0KvBSIRfk[/yt]

MP4 & mpeg4 are still sucks for Blackberry. but these are best formats for PSP. :)

You can see that obviously MP4 formats running BB have a lot of skip and lags.

MP4, not mpeg4
[yt]iUbLDnq5g1w[/yt]

Gotta keep this in mind, I would want a BB in Australia, but dammit.

Yeah I notice that. I think my DVD Catalyst 3 didn't skip anything when I copied it. The only thing I notice video "tearing" when there's a fast action happened. You used different DVD converter software so I'm going to check out what you listed the softwares. Because DVD catalyst 3 do not have font size for subtitle. I just want to make it bigger and readable. Not just me cuz my eye are sharp as eagle but my co worker and many other had hard time see fine print. Oh well!! I told them that I will check this out.

That's a good demo on Youtube.!!

I'm going to try Ultra Mobile 3gp software.. I just want the best tho

I downloaded Extra DVD ripper and see how it works. I know it'll work with BB.
