Hey everyone!

I am thinking it is almost time to replace my BlackBerry and I am thinking about the new Bold. Anyone out there have this one? Any likes or dislikes?

My issues mostly stem from the keyboard. It doesn't seem as responsive as the ones on the Curve or older models. Also, I am not sure about the ball to scroll around instead of the scroll wheel on the side.

Any reviews or feedback would be great!

I don't know a lot of people who have the Bold since it is still new, and a lot of people are still tied into a 2 year contract with the Curve. But I can tell you this, the Bold is bigger than the Curve, a little bigger than the 8700. I would put it in the same category as the 8800 - but with a track ball instead of a track wheel. Once you play with the track ball, you will love it and wonder how you got away without it... and would not go back to a track wheel. The Bold has 3G, Wifi and GPS. I think 3G is a little overrated right now. I would wait a couple more years before 3G is really useful.

I am going to try out the BB bold today, if possible. It may be my next phone to upgrade.

3g is NOT overrated, I disagree with that. The web content today is VERY complex and the videos would need a good streaming speed to keep up as well. I have a 3g phone which is an AT&T 8525 and 3g is VERY useful!

Ok, Why does you think 3G is overrated?

It's depends on carriers, 3G under att is faster as basic DSL and 3G under tmobile is fast as below than lite DSL, you can get around 1.4 mbps under att (could burst up to 3.6 mbps) when compared to around 348 kbps under tmobile.

EVDO has 2 ways, rev. 0 and rev. A, both of them are 3G, EVDO rev. 0 is fast as lite DSL, around 700 kbps at average and EVDO rev. A is around up to 2.5 mbps or little more.

What i heard that Bold and Storm support the SignMail, if you do have Sorenson VP; it does support and able read what the hearing people left the message for us.. it nice..

The reason I think it's overrated, is because the speeds are not as fast as they are advertised. I read an article in PC World a few issues back and they did some real world testing, and the speeds are nowhere close to half the advertised speed unless you are within 1/4 mile of the 3G tower. I have a friend who has a Tilt with 3G, we compared his 3g with my EDGE connection. *Some* locations his is faster than mine, but not by much. Other locations, we were the same. In one remote location, I was faster than him (web browser-wise). Many people, Deaf especially) look forward to the day when we can use our PDA devices to "video-call" one another. But if you look at it, almost all the phones have a camera on the other side, so you will have to flip your phone around to sign, then flip around again to watch their conversation. Yes, there are a *few* phones with camera in front, but the speeds are not that great. Once they make more and more cameras in front of the phone and 3G speeds are as fast as they advertise, then I will think they will be worth it. So, that is my opinion why I think 3G is overrated. Your mileage may vary.

I strongly doubt it because the Storm and Bold both use the same .3gp video format as the Curve and 8700 (OS 4.5 and OS 4.7). I am going to be looking at both devices this weekend, hopefully I can try it out and see.

Oh yup, I understand about 3G isn't perfect as advertised, nowhere to beat true DSL.

EVDO rev. A isn't bad, you can get around up to 3 mbps with fairly low latency, depends on area where you live but that sucks about wireless carriers limited you to 5GB for tethering.

Some mobile browsers can be part because of poor written that won't load so quickly or not smooth like IE mobile, jeez.

That's the same thing with Comcast cable internet, for example have different speeds. Some customers can get slower speeds, some others get faster speeds. They cannot promise the same speed due to traffic where the tower is using. The same thing with wi-fi internet, the more people use the same wi-fi network...it will slow down everyone's connection.

There are many new devices out these days. I heard iphone is good too. My friend seems to be happy with it haven't heard any complaints. I am still using T-mobile Sidekick3 the range what gets me always losing connection or signal is weak. I am looking into others as well, Verizon has good LG Voyager as well still, need to investigate how much coverage. I know my cousin and uncle have Black Berry they are also, happy with it. Many options to choose from. Good luck!

Blackberry isn't for me because I realized how expensive their plans are, so I decided to look for a unlocked phone on Ebay, maybe a Blackjack II until something better comes out that is not a blackberry in 2009. :) I don't want to be stuck on a contract with a new upgraded phone right now. I just will simply move my sim card to a unlocked phone. Blackberry is for people who got the money to pay the monthly bills, not me.

Yeah ATT 8525 still look so sexy to me.. But HTC Diamond is hotttie sexy device!!;)

I read article, said the bold has WMV formats. I wondering if 3GP format is still running bold or incapable? Because I dont want to convert all 3GP movie clips into WMV formats, if i purchased the bold. I will research it more before buy that.

Yeah I noticed that att's blackberry plan is somewhat expensive. thats why I plan to buy att bold, then unlock the GSM BOLD on tmobile & keep my flat payments..

Good luck, u planning to buy unlock device. ;)

G-tree, be careful on puchasing unlocked phones on ebay, some descriptions can be a lie or whatnot to decieve the money instead. Good luck.

I am aware of that. If they got plenty of positive feedback, then it's a good seller. Usually, the unlocked phones are the company of the phone, not the carrier of the phone, like for example T-mobile G1 which is the HTC Android which is a unlocked version of the phone to work on any GSM carrier.

Does Android OS can be installed on any HTC, that where WM was pre-installed at first place?

Yes I agree with that. However, Comcast and Qwest (in my area) still provides speeds close to 80-90% of the advertised speed, while 3G is about 30-50% of the advertised speed, even when it is very close to a 3G tower.. That is too much.

Hmm, interesting. I will have to check into that as well. I agree, I hope we do not have to convert incompatible files it to view in 3GP.

I met Sprint Relay agent during Great Lake Deaf Bowling Championship in Cleveland yesterday. He told me yesterday that Sprint Blackberry Bold will be coming very soon. I hope that plan price is cheaper than AT&T about $30/month but I m not hurry to buy other mobile.
