In the Bold statement, thank you for clarifying what he is campaigning for. I understand now.

Well, not in the bold statement but other above the statements, I am trying to understand what is going on in the news. I don't really like politics that much, but I am interest for the rights of the minority like we do in all walk of life if not in the rich and famous. I am liberal in Canada or in USA, I am Democrat. So that will catch me interest in the news. :P

Obama is the one who stirs things up by making outrageous statements.

The statement is not outrageous if one is truly not racially motivated. It was a reference to oppression based on superficial criteria. You have to look at it from a less than literal perspective. I guess the Repubs that are making a fuss are far too concrete and intent on finding something they could label as offensive.

If Republicans told Democrats they would have to ride in the back, they wouldn't be offended and say so?

Right. My parents used to say that all the time. Those of us deemed unruly were forced to sit in the back of the car. I don't see the big deal.

Jim Crow laws covered seating in buses and all public transportation, waiting rooms, theaters, eating establishments, etc. Any inference that one group of Americans should be relegated to a back seat of anything reflects that same attitude that the Jim Crow laws indicated--that one group of people is inferior to another, and not worthy of equal involvement in society and the political system.

Context, context. Do you think Obama really would mean that? Or would he imply that they are too unruly to sit up front next to the driver? I am sure his daughters covet the front seat and he may have spoken from that context. That is entirely human and normal. As I say, no biggie.

Yes, context. Obama's statement shows that he wants the Democrats to be in full control (driving) and the Republicans having no input or power at all (sitting in the back).

If he truly wanted to show that he was seeking equal cooperation from both parties he could have used an analogy of co-pilots on a plane, or two oxen in a yoke, or two rowers on a boat. No, he chose to use a driver (full control) and back-seat passengers (no control).

You know, when I was in grad school, I had a very good friend who is black. We were taking one of the schools vans to an exhibit of black art. A discussion was going on re: who could drive (had to be a school employee) and I said, "I'll drive, but she has to sit in back." Everyone laughed, the black individuals, as well. Why, because they knew full well there was no ill intent in my comment. In fact, I ended up not driving, and was sitting between her and another black student on the bus. She then said, "Uh huh. How does it feel now?" When you are not racist you can joke about racial matters because there is no ill intent. And those who are of a minority race are very good at detecting when there is no racism involved and when there is.

Oh, please. He was joking around with a bunch of adults who should be better able to infer context. They were simply looking for some way to stir the pot. Or as Banjo put it, "Making a mountain out of a mole hill." Looks like it backfired.:laugh2:
