State Legislator Wants Offenders Off Social Networking Sites

Georgia sex offenders could soon be removed from popular online social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace.

Rob Teilhet, a state legislator and candidate for attorney general, is introducing a measure that would allow the state authorities to send offenders' information directly to the sites to get their profiles permanently banned.

"It has been done in New York, and currently California and Oklahoma are considering similar measures," Teilhet said.

Some Georgia residents are giving the proposal overwhelming support.

"I think it would be great, because they shouldn't have access to that," one resident said.

"I think that's a great idea, because I'm all against sex offenders," another resident added.

Teilhet said 1 in 5 children are approached online, and 1 in 33 is approached heavily. Additionally, of those approached online, only 1 in 4 children tell their parents, according to an online safety advocacy group called Enough is Enough.

However, not everyone thinks the legislation will be easy to enforce.

"I think it'd be extremely hard to do," resident Jeff Schickel said. "(There's) too much availability to access the Internet outside of their home and in public spaces."

Teilhet said Georgia offenders would be forced to register any usernames or passwords they use with law enforcement. For instance, if they have a username of "scott1" or "johnson2," law enforcement would be able to track the activity of those usernames online. Teilhet added that Facebook and MySpace would play a big role in monitoring for sex offenders.

"It's not a matter of where Georgia gets jurisdiction over some Norwegian Internet provider, it's up to the social networkers themselves to do the enforcement," Teilhet said. "And they want to do this. This bill just gives them the authority to make it happen. Authority anywhere for sex offenders in the state of Georgia."

Not that hard to track them and ban them if you have a entire team of Perverted-Justice at your disposal looking for them and informing site admins that a pervert is a member of their site.

"all against sex offenders"? Why, is he trying to embarrass himself when there is a known fact that half of them could be innocent? Justice sucks sometimes...think about it.

How do you know that half of them is innocent? Do you have any facts or claims to back it up?

The number of people that are found innocent that are serving prison time after DNA evidence has become available is absolutely astounding. Many of these people have lost 25-30 years of their life serving time on some type of sexual abuse charge that they never were guilty of. The numbers are out there.

Yup, that is why I opposed death penalty. nev'r know if we the people are killing innocents.

Kids shouldn't be using social networking sites.

Well these networking sites can take things into their own hands by requiring you to be aged 18 or older to register and no photographs of anyone appearing younger than 18. But I also realize this is hard to monitor as many children are already accessing adult sites by falsifying their birth date on the user information page; and doing it without the parents consent or knowledge.

But I am glad that some states are trying to counter attack potential sex offenders, and I do agree with Jillio and Banjo, that there are innocent people sitting in federal prison right now for a crime they did not commit. DNA testing is expensive and not everyone can afford an appeal or retrial from DNA testing. Many just serve out their sentence and return home only to commit suicide because they know they will never truly get their life back because now they are restricted and labeled something they are not.

These laws would be of good use to catch the actual sex predators out there utilizing these networks to prey on their next victim.

It's not that expensive anymore, it's down to $40-$50 per testing now. In fact, it's gotten so cheap that petty crimes are now being solved by the use of DNA testing. Burglary crimes are being solved faster.

Some idiot drank out of a carton of milk in someone's house he broke into and left it on the counter. The cops finds it, took it to the lab and had a hit on the computer with the suspect's DNA logged on file. They arrested him on the charge of burglary.

What's hard these days is the backlog of cases for DNA testing, many states are reporting backlogs of 180 days. It's cheap to test, but the line is very, very long.

It's much more difficult if you are in prison and the majority of your family has died off while you were in prison and the few that remain alive you cannot contact. Many prisoners are lucky to have $5.00 to their name let alone $40 or $50. They often work for around 70 cents per hour most of which goes to commissaries or contraband depending on the prisoner.

Parents should be aware of what their children are doing on the internet.

Absolutely! I agree 100%

Also, I found out that a majority of the sex offenders were under age teenagers that had consensual sex.

I am more worried about knowing where violent criminal gang members are located than some dude, or dudette, that were caught feeling each other up by an angry parent some 10 years ago.

But ... thats just me.

Yup....which is why computers and laptops are now coming out with Parental Controls on them.

There are programs out there to monitor whichever account (let's just say child's account) on the computer. You would have access to see EVERYTHING typed, video'd, and so on and so forth.

Where did you get that information? When I look up sexual offenders, they are listed as having sexual relations with a minor, charged with statuatory rape, molestation of a minor or child, and so on and so on. They usually list the year and day they are charged, never when they were a minor, always as an adult.

I have even read about a married couple in Georgia that both had statutory rape charges against them from when they were teenagers. They both have to register as sex offenders even though they are married to each other. Its just silliness to the extreme.

Statutory Rape has many definitions. But, it can be as simple as an 18 year old male having sex with his 16 year old girlfriend.

Statutory Rape does not have to be forcible rape and no threat needs to be present.

It can also be two 16-17 year olds having sex with each other - both can be charged with statutory rape. Even though it is consensual, they are under the age of consent (in most states, age of consent is 18).

In cases of a 19 year old having sex with his 17 year old girlfriend, the 19 year old will have the record for the rest of his life.

Its just plain silly if you ask me. 100 years ago people were getting married at 15.

The Judges in Georgia are just plain silly too. They should be focusing on the dangerous predators only.

Also, in Georgia, you do not have to commit a sex crime to be considered a sex offender. That's right - you can STILL be considered a sex offender even though you have not done anything sexual.

The law, said to be one of the toughest in the nation, allows the state to keep a tight leash on child molesters, rapists and other sexual predators after they have served their prison time. But it also requires anyone convicted of kidnapping or false imprisonment of a minor to register as a sex offender regardless if a sexual act was committed.
