Best Career Choices for Deaf

I'm happy for you. Good job. But next time, try this, you might advise another who has experienced the same as you did, LIE. Have someone else answer the phone for you, and when you get the job, tell them you're deaf, and the law will save your arse.

LOL that is nice doing those lie. Would love to but now my job is awesome because I don't have to use phone but to doing machine and do computer works and if they need me, they would im me on my cell phone. SO no problem.

one more thing - it is surely liberating and awesome to work at home. Perhaps one day in coming future, I will do my own web developing business at home. For now - I just need to build up my solid resume and clients. Gotta love 21st century. Everything's all done by emails/VP/webcams/etc.

Even my dad (a hearing) said his companies and clients MOSTLY communicated by emails... and yes sometimes phone calls are needed now and then but we deaf people already have technology to compensate for it - VCO/VP/TTY/etc. Nothing's gonna stop us!

Hell yea I am with you about those emails! I love it. Even though I can talk pretty good on phone but only to my friends and family member as I know their voice. But then again I love emails. I agree with you to get some clients to be able to own your business. That's what I am working on is that I am going to workshop in Austin TX that they always have workshop for photographers there. I am going to attending Wedding 101. I been told it's successful to do wedding to make good money so I am doing that. Hehe. I gonna gather some good lens to be able do that. I can't wait!

Wow, that's aweful that people told you that they cannot hire you because you're deaf. That would pi$$ me off. Those are the people to file a complaint because they said it directly that they are discriminating against your deafness.

Does Accounting Specialist use the phone that much? I mean, it's not like Receptionist, right?

You can e-mail, call on the Relay when needed. Piece of cake to accommodate.

Shame on those people.

True but sadly you have to use phone for going through banks, clients, etc and that time I didn't know it was discriminating against me what they did in the past. Plus I never knew about IP-Relay. Or even VP-200. I didn't know until a year ago. Yea it's nut that I don't know much but now I do and know what ot do next itme if they ever pulled that shita gain on me.

OIC. It wasn't because of your deafness but because you wanted to work in your home. I can understand that.

Even looking for a job in this small town for out of the house I couldn't get anything. They either want customer service or telephone work. I don't do well on the phone at all and I can't handle customer service. I have problems reading lips and I am still learning ASL. When I moved from Central to Eastern Missouri, I had no choice but to work out of the home and now I have to stop that. I am just going to pursue my hobby and see if I can make any money that way. I make handmade cards with papercrafts and fabric.

I hope it goes well with your crafts. I'm glad that you have a skill that you enjoy doing. :)

I feel lucky to be working for a such nice company. A lot of communication at work is by email. I also write or type to talk with people and some are learning sign.

If SimplyMint is having so much trouble that he may shut off electricity, he could try looking for somewhere cheaper to live like Vermont. :P The gas is only $3.39 a gallon here now.

I've been having no trouble with my bills and set them to be paid automatically because I have money piling up fast enough. I have weekends off, so I can go to social functions.

Wow, that would be close to my sister :) She lives in New Hampshire (near Manchester).

If the pay would be raised at the same rate as the cost of living, I would have no trouble. That probably belongs on another thread, but I just felt like saying it.

show-off...... :laugh2: I avoid doing that because of possible double-billing.

That's true but all of the places I applied said "You need to use phone to be able to commutation." "Oh you are deaf? Well, we need someone to use phone so otherwise we can't hire you, I am sorry." "Oh well I am not trying to say that you can't work with us because you are disabled but we do need hearing people to use the phone, so sorry!"

That is kind of bs what people telling me for 3 years of searching of jobs. One time when the lady told me that they can't hired me because I am deaf.....I cussed her out and she called security guards and they kicked me out the hotel. Ha Pissed me off how hearing people like this not giving a chance to see how I do instead said "sorry, you need to hear on phone" Blah.

At least I am happy where I am right now. I love my job and my photography!

Tell them to make the accodomations or they will be hearing from your lawyer?

Well, I wish I have knew that but I didn't know until like two or three years ago. I know that is crazy that I didn't know. I would do now but it's too late.

Redfox's method can be dangerous. If auto decut from my bank, could cause problem via internet. If direclty bank statement, sure because correct routing info. Not use internet login etc...

However, I do use auto-pay for fixed amount bills. For example, my AT&T bill is $80 monthly (wife and i)... I know my usage is unlimited so no worry over the limit. So I set up bank to auto pay $80-85 monthly. One less bill to worry about. i do get email notification as its being process to send.

My car insurance is auto decuted from bank directly monthly.

Car loan do same thing. it save 30 monthly if I do directly bank to them. Wife and I do earn enough a month to allow them to do it. If I dont earn enough, I control by write check.

Its all about budget in advance to do auto-pay. If you dont know how to budget, dont do auto-pay. Easy to lose control.

:hmm: good idea. Auto-pay for fixed bills. BTW - didn't you mean RedFox's method because Reba didn't suggest anything in this thread.

Thanks for correction. I just edit and put correct name. You right.

Now you have better idea how to control your financial with auto pay stuff. Peace of mind.

I do get bills and manually insert amount of bill says into internet and send bills online. Save me postage stamps and cramp from handwriting.

I've done this method for the past few years. It's becoming easier and more secure all the time. I'd say it's more secure than physical mailing since I've lost less money online than physical.

I don't use automatic pay for anything because my budget is always running close to zero, and if I'm charged with not enough money in the bank, I get hit with all sorts of fees from the person who charged for not enough funds plus late payment fee, and bank charges overdraft fee and non-sufficient funds check fee, then I charge more at the store because I don't know that I've been charged these fees, so I think I have money in the bank, and I get more non-sufficient funds fees every time I charge until I get a notice in the mail. I used to change banks when this happened, but now that banks are having financial problems staying in operation, all banks are starting to charge more, so there's no point changing now.

I just paid my electric bill online. It was less than $20 plus a $35 setup fee because I just moved here minus a rebate due to power costs being lower than forecast. Pretty easy to take care of with my budget not running close to zero. Each time I get paid, I draw a line that I won't go below to save up.

I'm happy that my good job enables me to save up easily. I work overtime sometimes if it's needed too.

I used to never allow myself to go below $10,000, then I changed it to $5,000, then $1,000, then $500, then $300, $200, $100, and now I must use every dollar I can get my hands on. The economy looks like it's showing signs of improvement, and we've worked out a deal with our buyers so we can keep and process enough of our own food to live on, so that will save us a lot. We're also doing all the work ourselves this fall instead of hiring temps, and I could get used to this, and I think this is how we should have been running the farm even in good times! I don't mind at all doing the work! Either I do this work here, or I work for somebody else who pays me, then I pay somebody else to do my work, so I might as well do my own work. Yes, things are starting to look good for us! I was thinking seriously about going to Gallaudet University for school, but I think things will work out better if I stay here, at least until the economy gets back up on its feet.

I just could not agree with you.

There's no jobs that are more "suitable" for deaf. Deaf can do just ALMOST ANYTHING as long as they are PROVEN in their skills. They will pay a damn good income for your skill and yes they will kiss your ass.
