here's some pic.'s that illustrate the type of dog I worked with today at the shelter and described in my "what did you do today" post. I thought there were enough dog folks here to show: female1
The puppy I worked with was a little male pup. Quick learner:)
 
cutie!! my coworker had two and several friends had them. what is so special about beagles?
 
:wave: for me, I just thought "my" puppy I worked with today was really fun and I enjoyed his outgoing personality.

in general, I think many people like Beagles because they are small, have low grooming needs, easy to carry/physically manage and have some nostalgia to them because of "Snoopy" association. They are hounds so they are VERY motivated by scent and therefore by FOOD, so they tend to learn quickly, show interest in handler <many pet dog people like a dog who really seems to respond and want to be with them, which beagles do if they associate you with something yummy like food treats>. Some other dogs due to their nature do NOT tend to show as much interest and/or affection to their people and many owners are "turned off" by that.
Beagles also tend to be easily be ok with other dogs, which is not the case for all dogs/breeds. They're often like this because of what they were bred for: to hunt in small packs. Today in the U.S. there are still a few breeders who run hunting Beagles but very few.

yup, famous for barking and specifically "baying", a drawn-out often hoarse and very loud bark meant to call attention to humans, that the dogs have treed or have prey-
 
We had a beagle/daschund mix when I was a teenager. Wonderful, sweet dog.

I think beagles are the most generic (and I meant that in a good way!) kind of dog you can have. If you ask a kid to draw a picture of a dog, it will probably look sort of beagle-ish. If you want a dog to romp with you, cuddle with you, learn things from you, chase a stick, make you laugh, bark to protect your house, be friendly with kids, men, and women, have low grooming needs (other than cleaning out those ears), a beagle will do all that for you.
 
They're all so cute , but I like Belle the most! She look very sweet! I love Beagle! I was thinking of getting a Beagle mix before I got Marty.
 
I had a Beagle as a kid... wonderful dog. She could be mischievous though. :)

Check out this Beagle Jailbreak video. The owners couldn't figure out how the beagle kept escaping while they were gone, so they put up a video camera.

We had a Beagle too , it name was Rum and he was mischievous to! He stole toys from other people yards!

Haha.. :) My beagle used to steal cinnamon rolls off my plate when I used to read newspapers in the morning. I'd eat one roll and reach for the next roll while reading and the other roll was gone. I looked over to see my beagle quickly finishing off the roll she stole. :giggle:

She also used to go absolutely nuts at the sight of carrots. No idea why, but she loved carrots more than anything else in the world. :shock:
 
:) carrots are sweet - dogs, like humans, tend to like "sweet". why anti-freeze is so dangerous. Beagles are very hardy and athletic little dogs, which makes them good field dogs but can also help them find a lot of mischief!

I think Beach Girl is right, often when people think of dogs, they think of Beagles, as a "hang-out, kid-friendly, all-around dog". That can work both in favor of and against the breed.

Amazing video. Love how the other three are just hanging back, saying "OK, buddy, you do what you gotta do." At the end it looked like the little one was just waving "bye-bye" to the escape artist.
 
We have a Beagle.. and seriously she is the best dog I have ever had. She is OLD right now. .. going on 15 or 16 years old.. and is well mildly obsese.. but she is so smart.. does a lot of tricks and is super wonderful with all three of my little kids. Even lets my 3 year old try and ride her.. and doesn't get angry when my Autistic 5 year old son pulls her tail or takes her bones away.
PERFECT dog.

Finlay would come into the kitchen as soon as he heard me cutting carrots! I had a hard eating carrots when he dies as it reminded me of him so much!
Our Beagle would sleep in my younger bed and when she tried to put the blanket away from our dog he would get mad at her! We had a German Shepherd too and she was older than our Beagle . Gin loved to lay on the river bank to stay cool and our Beagle , Rum would bug the HELL out of poor Gin by sitting on her head! WE named our dog Rum and Gin as our dad love to drink and we called our dogs back in the house we would yell out their name!!

We have two beagles, a brother and sister.

They are from one of those packs who breed them for hunting. I belong to the hunt club and we chase jackrabbits in the desert with the beagles.

My beagles are generally very quiet. They only bark when something outside interests them, like a cat on the wall. Inside the house, they really only make noise when I come to let them out of their daytime crate, but they wait until they see me, then they jump around and bark.

Food-motivated is an understatement! A beagle who won't eat is a very, very sick beagle.

My beagles are actually a cross of English & American beagles and Harrier (the hound in between beagles and foxhounds, in size). They are big. Both are about 17" at the shoulder and 35-40 pounds.

They are super-good with people and incredibly tolerant of my 6 year old son. He can wrestle with them and they don't mind.

However, they are also driven by their noses, so we have to be very careful that they don't get loose. They will run off because they are busy sniff, sniff, sniffing.

Here is a picture of them. Juniper, the girl, is on the left, and Chopper(Jodphur is his real name), the boy, on the right. They were born in June 2010.

That video is one of my favorites. :D

Beagles are smart. One of mine figured out how to open an unlatched arcadia door and to push down/open a door with a lever instead of a knob.

We have a wooden gate in our backyard that leads to the alley. It's latched on top, but not on the bottom. So, the bottom moves a bit; I keep a big rock there to keep it in place. I swear my beagles watch me move the rock & are working out a plan to move the rock, wiggle out the gap, and go for an adventure.
